Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • bora 4motion loses power

Every now and then my 01' 4mo decidees to lose power at around 2500rpm's. It pulls very smoothly after this reduction in power but I'm far from impressed. The next set of lights and she pulls like a freight train.

Anyone else experienced this and/or know the solution??

Mate, you need to have that scanned by someone. Most likely to be a coil pack.

      hi

if your car is very slow to rev and has no power it is most likey the air mass meter, it is a common problem on this model, i will get worst over over time

Given the intermittent nature of the issue, and the fact that failing coil packs are a common issue (more common than MAF issues) on the Mk IV, I'd be leaning towards coil packs.

Getting the car scanned will likely reveal the issue where-ever it lies.
        Nothing to see here...

Most likely the pencil coils, if it is found to be one then replace the 6 of them, less hassle in the long run, and you will find the following "good ones" will follow suit.
          Very common

                Gentlemen,

Thanks to all who gave tips. Sounds like a trip to my diagnostic guy then. Got my car back from the panel beaters and has rained every day since (typical). Will do some pics when sun comes out and I can wash her.

Hey Micklosh, did you ever figure out the issue?
What sort of money to fix this issue? How to prevent it?

                  cheers

I had a pencil coilpack let go on me about 1 yr ago... VAGCOM scan told me exactly which cylinder was misfiring... VW tech confirmed it!

I bought a set of 6 new coils from ECS tuning and changed the plugs at the same time....
