Cost of ownership on that mk4 1.6L would probably be higher than your 350Z. Not worth it in my opinion.

What is the going rate for a MK4 these days?

As the other local residents here have said, would cost you long term a lot more than your 350z would be.

            1.6 Auto.......

I did somre more research i think the one im really keen on is a 20v 1.8 L one

if the car is only worth say 15 k, which is less than half the value of my 350z? ill be paying alot less stamp duty. Is that what you guys mean by ownership? Im not understanding how owning a car thats alot less in value will cost more than my 350 in ownership? Sorry for the noobness. Please explain.

When these old Golfs break they cost $$ to fix.
Your Jap car will have cheaper parts, and because it is newer it wont break as often.

You have to add up total cost of ownership: initial cost, insurance, rego, fuel and repairs. (some will say depreciation too) Only then can you compare apples.
                MK4 GTI - Sold
                MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
                MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.

About the only thing that will be cheaper will be fuel, insurance and maybe depreciation may be lower too (as the car is older, worth less and has already run through the majority of its depreciation).

Rego and CTP will cost roughly the same. Repairs will vary - older cars are more likely to have issues (and thus need repairs), and Euros can be more expensive to fix than Japanese cars due to a number of factors. Servicing will also vary depending on what your policy is on dealer vs 3rd party servicing - if you prefer dealer servicing, you're going to pay a decent amount for it.

As you've indicated, you'd certainly end up with some cash in your pocket initially, and if that helps with a deposit for a house, it may well be worth it. Don't expect though the general running costs over the long term to be massively cheaper though, overall the difference may be relatively small.
                  Nothing to see here...

I have something else throw in as well, older cars have generally gone through most of there gremlins, so in some cases badly built newer cars can be worse off than an older car.

If you have at the look at a model life-cycle, the seventh year is generally the most reliable year as this is when the gremlins have been sorted but generally not yet old enough for things to break.

As a Mk4 1.6 owner (and a AE112R Corolla for the other half), saving money and having a 1.6 mk4 is mutually exclusive .

ie: Had my Golf since new, done 113K kms. Mechanically it's getting it's 3rd gearbox at the moment (common manual 1.6 Mk4 issue). There's a few electrical bugs that happen and window regulators (plastic clips that hold the front window glass need to be changed to metal) seem a normal Mk4 thing.

The Corolla's done 110K kms, and hasn't had any issues... yet. But there's isolated issues with ECU's but nothing systemic like what happens with Mk4's.

If you want to save money, I'd buy jap.

                          I would keep the 350z.

The insurance probably is all that much more expensive.

                          Case in point:

                          1999 MkIV 1.6 GL Rally, $1300

BRAND NEW Renaultsport Megane 2.o Turbo, $1100......

Same insurance company based on Rating 1 with optional excess.

There are quite a number of MkIV's on the road, there are also quite a few in wreckers and crushers also. Something that was pointed out to me by a friend in the insurance gig is that sometimes the more exclusive the car, the cheaper the insurance. There are so many MkIV golfs on the road that the likelyhood of one of them being involved in a crash is pretty damn high, that coupled with the amount of P platers that drive them also bumps up the likelyhood of one being in a crash.

Do yourself a favour, check exactly how much a golf will cost you, I think you will be surprised how much a Mexican car can cost over Japanese (or South African, depends on the luck of the draw!)

                            Holy Cow! $1300!!
My 03 GTI with mods listed is only $1100, and it's insured for agreed value of $22000, and that's with RACV who I only insured with cause I had a $450 insurace credit with.

Aren't most of the GTI's made in Wolfsburg? According to my VIN mine was at least...?

Yup. But I think he's referring to normal Golfs.
