  • 1.6 manual gearbox... going...going...

Okay, so I'm trying to suss out if I have another gearbox problem.

    Spec: 8/2000 Golf 1.6 manual

Gearbox: Yes it had the DUU box. That went bust in '06 @ 85K kms. I had a replacement installed. P/N ESS 103 301 SW (I'll double check it tonight)

    Symptoms:
    - whining off the throttle (sounds like a bearing, but doesn't whine on throttle). It's been getting louder during the past hundred km's or so.

it crunched whilst in 4th gear slowing down.

Anything else I should check..... apart from my bank balance to see if I can afford another 'box?

    cheers

Sounds like you have busted the rivets and they are floating in your box somwhere...

haha... I was thinking it maybe the rivets, but then this is a non-VW box so I won't really know until/if it gets pulled apart.

I'll check the gearbox oil level. It was changed 15K kms ago (drain via the lower plug, fill via the LHS plug).

The engine's leaking oil down the bottom near the 'box. I'm pretty sure its the engine oil as it's pretty thin and I have to keep on topping it up (1L/5K kms). So the gearbox doesn't look like it's leaking.

        thanks

Put some banana skins in it & drive it quickly to the nearest trade in centre!

Bummer, with our old workshop, we had a customer that went through 3 factory reconditioned boxes in their 1.6 all before 120,000km's - so I understand how bummed out you must be.

            Gearbox

These gearboxes in the 1.6 Golf really are a disgusting effort by VW. I am had mine rebuilt (broken reverse gear) at less than 100000km, was "ticking" since 50000km

You would think that after the number of Golfs (since the Mk1) that have been made they would have got the gearbox sorted.

Its basically the same gearbox internally as the Golf 3, 2 and 1 efforts. Thats why they break so often on the G4.

I have a fully rebuilt DUU box here with the bolt kit in it, on the shelf with warranty $1200.

                Update

I dumped the gearbox oil this morning.

Gold metallic with black (yes, predominately gold) with metal shards and a few chunks of metal in it....

                here we go

                      Thanks Golf Loon,

At the moment, i'll let the box go for the first come first served customer. I'm getting the current box pulled and will see what happens from there.

                      cheers
