  • Engine Oil - Bora 4Motion

    Hey guys,

Just wondering what Oil is recommended for a Bora 4Motion?

I have no idea what's currently in my car.
Last time (about 12 months ago) I had the car serviced by VW, I got 3 different responses as to what was put in... one by the service manager, a different one by the tech who supposedly serviced the car, and a different one on the sticker they placed on my car windshield...

Needless to say I was not happy with their service anyway, so will be going elsewhere... but i'm wondering what oil is recommended to put in the car.

The manual that came with the car is also as useless as dog turd, and does not give me a fixed specification beyond VW 500, 501, 502.....

So I guess what do you use and recommend in your 4motion bora?

    Cheers

    4Motion Oil

I have been happy with Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30. According to the Shell site (biased I know) but there is a lube match function which also indicates this is a good match for european models with variable service intervals (i.e. a longLife oil). One thing I have noticed is that I don't use as much oil as before (previously using Castrol Edge 5W-30). Listening closley to your engine can assist. If the vehicle has a slight tappety type noise (usually starts about 30 secs after starting in the morning) perhaps a thicker oil will help. Something like 10W40. Shell Helix Ultra make one of these too but Royal purple is very good if you can find it and have the money(around $85?). I'm in the Dandenongs in Vic (slightly cooler summer temps) so I can get away with a thinner oil.
    I hope this helps.

      Hi,

As tigger says Royal purple is good. These days I am not to fussed with the oil I put in, as the place I get to do I trust but 5W30 or so should do.

OH and if you plan to do it yourself, you need a very very big socket to get the filter off !!

"generic" used to be 20w50... hope it aint that.

15w40 aint bad, but is mineral, synthetic would be better.

          5w40 or 10w40'd be best.

Use Penrite HPR5 - that's what is recommended for the 2.8l V6 Bora 4motion 2000-2005 on the Penrite website.

The Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 would also be good as advised by tigger19.

Just choosing any oil based on whether it is 10W-40 or 20W- 50 is just not good advice, it's just a throwaway comment IMO.

"Nah taking it to my old mans mechanic to do... but he only puts his generic oil in if none is specified"

I'd be very wary of taking my baby to a mechanic who would just put any oil in anything

The 90,000k service includes brake fluid replacement and pollen filter replacement apart from the Oil & filter and routine checks.

You really should choose an oil with the right spec for the engine
VW501.1 or whatever it is (going by memory here)

The Fuch's (available at auto stores) was one of the few I found that actually had the VW spec written on it.

              Cheers,

              Keith

Oh and as for needing a big socket for the filter, I just used a large crescent spanner to loosen it then removed by hand !!!

                    Couldn't find the fuchs stuff...

Ended up picking up Motul 8100 5w40, as it was on special and recommended over the Castrol edge stuff... is VW 502 approved.

                    Will see how it goes...

Yeh I tried that the first time round and ended up cracking the filter... 60 $ later I will just stick with my socket
