  • Am i getting ripped off here?

My Golf has been dropping oil like crazy of late and its rego time so needed to get it fixed

Its losing a couple litres every month

Have replaced the sump plug before with a oversize plug as that was a previous problem but leak is back from there and they want $180 to get a new one and machine it or some crap and make sure thread is right

Other leak is coming from rocker cover gasket and they say that needs to be replaced to ........been quoted $350 on that, apparently need to take off the manifold and some more jibberish i dont understand

Clearly i know little about fixing cars but the members here do.....so does it sound like i am being taken for a ride?

Did they say you only need to replace the rocker cover gasket? I'd GUESS for a competent mechanic that'd have to be about a 2-2.5hr job at most..That price may be a little high (depending on where you're taking it though...)

Aaaaand I'm not sure about the plug mate

Dont laugh but i take it to my local Midas ......they seem ok and have been taking it there for a while mostly out of convenience for general servicing but when something like this comes up i dont know what to think

Yeah said replace rocker cover gasket and just clean/degrease everything which i think was another $70

Ok so maybe a little high but not a total rip ......cheers

Have had bad experiences with VW service centre but even with this place it was the forums that diagnosed my MAF problem about a year ago when they were clueless

Ok thanks. No doubt seb is one of best but little pricey for me ....guess you pay for quality but for the simple stuff just out of my range

                  not to be rude
but you go to midas and you will be ripped off.. kmart, ultratune..

everyone will agree, and yes saying that you will find some good ppl and what not

but if you want your car looked after and if you genuinely cared you would spend the money to have it 100% right by any of those guys mentioned as they are all vw/audi specialists.

its the same as takign your ferrari to a hyundai dealership ... lol (well not really, but u know)
                  What’s behind you doesn’t matter..

Talk to Seb/bug_racer - he's at Girraween, maybe 15 minutes down the Great Western Highway from Parramatta. Well worth the effort to see him IMHO.
                    Nothing to see here...

Thanks all for your suggestions ......have spoken to Seb before for something else but just couldnt afford his price at the time but i hear the point about getting the job done right and having a specialist look after the car

                          Appreciated

At least get a quote from Seb before you decide who will do the job. It cant hurt and its better than just assuming that Seb will cost you too much.

I've taken my car to Midas a total of two times, simply because I couldn't drive it any further and they could fix the problem for me. Both times I've ended up almost in an argument with them about stupid costs generated out of nowhere; I am stingey with that sort of thing but they were very pricy lol. If you work in Parramatta just get some quotes for your repairs at a few shops for a good idea on the going price.
