  • Weird rattling noise

    Hi guys,

Can I just start off by saying... great forum! Love ur work boys (and girls I think!)
I have been buzzing around this forum for a while but never really introduced myself formally.
I'm Ben from Melbourne, and bought my 2000 GTi 12 months ago, and have been loving it ever since!

However just last night, I started to hear a very unusual rattling noise, which sounds like its coming from the roof, not far behind where my head is!?

I have obviously inspected the roof to find nothing loose, and as it only occurs when im driving, its been quite hard to investigate, but hopefully 2nite I can get my g/f to drive so I can check it out without swerving!

It only seems to occur when I am going over say 90/100km's.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi Ben,

Have you checked for play in the top mount for the d/s seat belt, they do tend to get a bit of wear in them in over time ? Rattles can be a PITA to diagnose so letting the g/f drive and investigating further might be the go.

Best of luck and welcome to the forum

Can i also suggest sprying around the aperture seal of the sunroof, it might be dry and rubbing on the sunroof. Had this with 996 and 997 turning corners it would creak or rattle as the body flexed , turned out to be a dry seal

          Thanks boys... Appreciate the help.

I have had problems with my sunroof, where I have to get the trackers replaced as it wont open... Had never made a noise though up until Monday night... Yesterday I had the sunroof tilted to allow air in and seems it isnt making the noise now!
May have been something loose in there that the wind "fixed"! ha

Been meaning to buy the parts from the US to fix the trackers as per the Vortex thread, but havent got around to it yet... Exchange rate isn't helping either!

Didn't know you had a sunroof and by what you've said it seems that may well be where the weird rattling noise is coming from.
