  • Bee-sting antenna repair

The bee-sting antenna on the roof of my car has a rubber collar/grommet thing around the base. This rubber collar has split and is threatening to part company with the car completely. I could glue it of course, but by handling, it's obvious that sitting on top of the car in the full sun has not done it any favours at all. It is rather brittle and gluing would only be a very temporary fix at best.

It looks as if the entire antenna assembly has to come off the roof to fit a new rubber collar around the base. How does the antenna come off? Do I have to remove it to fit a new collar? Is the rubber collar available separately as a spare part?

im sure you can get the rubber however u will need to remove the whole antenna anyhow to chance it properly .. i think anyhow?

grease up ring and upper part of aerial and SLIDEEEEEEEEEE it on!!!

if you have some difficulty that way, warm up rubber with a hairdryer to soften and expand rubber before trying to slide on.

      viola!!!

to do it the other way,you have to drop most of the hood lining down

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. Cool, I'll try forcing it over the base first. Now I just have to find an ETKA so I can look up the part number.

To all Mk4 owners encountering this problem:

This morning I went to Barloworld VW to the spare-parts counter, asking for this rubber seal. The guy said that the individual seal is NOT available for individual purchase, it is sold as part of the antenna kit which is $350.

He put me onto a specialist Golf wrecker in Clayton South, he also will only sell the whole assembly.

Looks like I deal with a potential leak in the future as half of mine has already disappeared and I aint paying for a whole antenna setup when I don't need it!!!

That's a good point, I hadn't even thought about it leaking just the fact it looks rubbish.

Let us know how you go with the ebay purchase, might be a worthy investment
