  • just bought golf and troubles begins

    Hi All

Last week , I finally purchase our VW golf 1999 4th generation.

I wanted to ask , Does the dealer who sold
us the car has to offer warrranty on a car 7 years old car.?
    its done 85 000km.

My wife was driving it back home tonight, and she started to
wind down the passenger window and it just wont come backup.

before I start to mess with it. I am not sure of the
    warranty requirements now.

But someone mention to check all the windows before we bought it.
it was ok then. but within a week.... the window is now fully down,
I can hear the motor winds but nothing happens.

    thanks for any advice

    David

    Generic reply

I've never seen the power window set up in a 4, but I've had plenty of others to bits. If the motor is working but the window doesn't wind up it's usually caused by something that's worked loose. Check the bolts that secure the motor and mechanism. Tighten them after making sure that the winder gears mesh fully.
I very much doubt that the car would be warrantied unless a special, transferable guarantee is in place.

Isn't it law to have a 3 month warranty in NSW?

      Check your paperwork.

Yeah its broken. The plastic wheel that the wire goes round will have broken. Very common on Mk3 and 4s.

All Golf 4 regulators are suspect.
Both our 4s broke ,sons 4 times.VW admitted poor build quality ,a piece of plastic breaks.
            Still a good vehicle .
            Golf 4s are great.

                Hi All

                thanks for reply so far.

I rang th eplace and yes , at least its under warranty.
so I will go and get it repair tomorrow.

but I found out that regulator cost $ 300 .
I think I better safe up now, in case the others decides to go.

                  Why?

Knowledgeable people.....Why do they fail? Is there any preventative maintenance you can do? Adjustment? Lubrication? @ $300 a pop I reckon it would be worth avoiding!

                      hi

I go the window regulator fixed today under warranty.

Does not look hard to do.but because it was
under warranty. I let the guy do the swap.

They literally replace the complete assembly except for the
                      motor.

the orignal ones on the car were made of plastic.
hence over time, it would crack / break and fail.

Not sure if lubricating the pastic wheel will make it last.
but the new ones are made of metal....

now the golf feel good as new again.

I must say , this golf is a very solid car. comapre to the
                      japanese corrolla etc.....

My Drivers side window refused to go up recently.pulled the trim off (found this link that explained removal http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dgace/door_led_mod.htm )
I found out through some phone calls that its not the regulator that usually dies but the 2 CHEAP plastic clips that hold it up. Went to Vw parts and asked for the clips ,the so called parts expert explained that THEY dont change the clips but change the whole LOT,regulator, wires clips etc FOR parts value $700!!! I bought the clips for $120 +gst which include the new cables.
It took a while to work out the way that they go but its not difficult.
Oh buy the way the new clips are made of aluminium not bodgy plastic.
