Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk4 ignition barrel / not starting

    Hey all,

When starting my Mk4 golf 1.8 last week there was a loud snapping noise in the ignition barrel and now the key stays in the "start" position without any spring back and the car does not turn over / start.

I have removed the steering wheel, lock cylinder and will get around to removing the ignition switch tonight. My question is, is the spring loaded mechanism apart of the ignition switch or the actual barrel housing?

Has anyone encountered this issue before and know what actually needs to be replaced?

    Thankyou all!

My mate had the same issue with his. Need to replace the whole ignition barrel (FYI his was NOT one with central locking so I’m not sure what to do if it is)
