Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk4 suspension help please.

Hi guys, it's been a long long time between posts.

My FK Streetlines have started leaking from the drivers side strut. This scares me as it probably means I'll need to order new everything (I got the FK's from ECS years ago).

Tbh I'm not fussed about being low these days and would just like to drive around problem free.

I'm guessing that locally bought OEM suspension would cost more than a good quality cup kit purchased overseas?

Any suggestions on the best way to get things sorted (or even "for sale" posts that might be useful) would be awesome.

    TIA

What car we talking about Peanut? GTi FWD? Bora 4motion?

There's plenty of cheap budget coilovers on eBay. (<$500)

But if you wanted something that was decent but not overly expensive I'd be looking at
    BC Racing Coilovers ($1k - $1.3k)
    OR
    Solo-Werks - $1k.

Sorry mate, it's a GTI. Thanks for the suggestions, but I think I'm gonna skip the coilovers this time around. The roads in Queensland are pretty crap. Perhaps a cup kit would be a little more comfy, and still ride low enough to look nice.

I'm running Bilstein TC Sport shocks with the Eibach lowered springs that came with my GTI. Rides pretty nice, worlds apart from the cheap Weitec coilovers I used to have (which also blew a shaft seal). Although I'd run the stock springs if I had them. I got the shocks from Cascade German in the US via eBay.

Id go Bilstein B8 damper set with low springs in the rear (in the Polo that means H&R not sure about the golf in that respect) and probably stockish height front springs (maybe even keep stock) to keep the front geometry right. Heavy rear bar and then correct the rear toe -in with shims. Couldn't think of a cheaper/better way to do it without spending big. Oh and re-bush the lower control arms.
