  • Alignmment Done now for Control Arm Bushings

    Just got the car back from alignment. Cost was $110 (4 wheel alignment). Chris had a good look underneath and told me to start thinking about control arm bushes, as they are a little soft/worn and with the extra power on tap now, apparently the toe-in/out can change considerably under acceleration.

    So it looks like my next project will be getting hold of some TT control arm bushes for the upgrade, he reckons it'll also tighten up the turn-in handling as well, so that'll be a nice side benefit.

    Has anyone here tried the ECS full urethane bushing kits or the kit they have with the urethane fronts/TT OEM rear bushes. Just wondering if the full urethane kit would be too harsh for a daily driver.

    So who can review or has tried any of these kits? Any tips/advice appreciated.

    I think Al (quozl) has them on his R (the ECS setup). I've driven it and it's pretty stiff and a little harsh over the bumps but overall it's fantastic. Also I'd say the rollcage ads a lot to this more than anything though.

      Hey my friend you know you will have to re do the Alignment, you probably do but just pointing out anyway.

          Yeah mate, he was just giving me a heads up on what I should be looking at so I can plan ahead a bit they're not actually shot yet, he just pointed out to me that the stock ones, can allow some flex once some extra power is available. I just got new tyres on so I wanted to at least get some kind of check done. When I get the bushes done I'll just treat another alignment as part of the job at hand.

            I have the anti wheel hop kit from ECS on my A3. The bushes did squeak for a while after I fitted them and I was always squirting Inox in them. Personally, I'd go with the TT rear bushes and leave the front bush std. I have the TT bushes in my Ibiza and they seem pretty tight, unlike the std suspension.

              Who did you get to do it down there? Did you get someone who is a specialist with European cars or just your local wheel place?

                He's a specialist, Inline Steering and Suspension, he knows Euro cars inside out, hence the $110 alignment charge and it's taken me a week since I put my new tyres on to actually get my car in there for a simple alignment. I've learnt the hard way that tyre/wheel places and alignment on our cars = don't bother.

                  Hey Snowy, I myself ordered the kit with the TT OEM rears. I only have a 1.6& running eibach coils and bilstein struts/shocks and found the replacement to be a big difference I also got new ball joints thought I would change them while I was pulling the arms apart................

                  Also, If you attempt this yourself (really not that hard of a job) I followed the link below (off site fron TDI forums) and found it very helpful, all in all took me about 2-3 hours

                  HOW TO change the lower control arm bushings I just had these extra LCA's kicking around my garage, so I decided to throw in some new bushings and I will Re & Re them in the car another time. So I don't have any pics of how to do that part yet. But they are not that hard to take out if you are...


                  If you have any questions more than happy to advise.....

                    Hey, thanks for the review and the How-To link mate. Very helpful. I've been doing a little reading up and I think the kit with urethane front bushes and the TT rear bushes might be the way to go. I found a couple of reviews saying the Urethane bushes in the rear position are pretty harsh and also apparently wear out quick (seems possibly urethane not suited too well to the rear possy).

                      I've heard that too with urethane... you might be best asking the guys who set your suspension up.

                        He did have bushes there and showed them to me, but through the plastic bag (they were Blue in colour and the brand name on the bag was a local one I didn't recognise) they looked to be urethane.

                        As he advised me it wasn't urgent, but was something I should plan for before too long, I just decided that I'd rather ask around a bit and possibly go with something that others had used and could verify the end result/differences, like the TT/R32 ones.

                          all the guys on vortex are gfoing with the tt/r32 bushes over poly as the poly wears quick so ive read. ill be getting tt/r32 bushes if i need to do mine. if you wanna buy together ill be in for sure, i think a few people might want some.

                            I checked ECS shipping cost for two kits was around $90 US (so $45 US each)
                            That drops to a little over $35 US shipping each, if a third person came in. (But then they have to be distributed locally)

                            I've got my 60,000 km service coming up in the next 4 weeks, so I'm now tossing up whether I should bite the bullet and get this done at the same time.
