    Not necessarily:

Genuine VW MK4 Golf Bora 3B Passat RHD Front Right Door Switch Trim Handle Black | eBay

1997 Golf CL, 2011 Caddy Life TDI, 2007 Golf TDI, 1996 Vento GL (red), 2008 Skoda Octavia TDI
1996 Vento GL (white) - RIP

Yeah, but most of the strength comes from a thick piece of plastic that is part of the door card, the trim mounts to it with 3 push pins.
I have a spare of that peice but you can't pull on it (I tested)

Fair enough, from what I can see on ebay, the thick bit of plastic is a bracket that can be bought separate to the entire door card. Unfortunately I can only find left hand drive ones on ebay (Car Front Left Door Grab Handle Cover Panel Braket VW Bora Golf4 MK4 02-07 A4Z9 | eBay).

If you can find a part number on the bracket then you might be able to find a new one being sold on ebay alternatively try Camden GTI Performance at Campbelltown, they run a VW wrecking yard and they may be able to source the bracket for you.

That's interesting! When I was looking at it, it looked like one part with the card. Sweet, time to find a part number!
