Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Where to start?!?

Ok, so I’ve got an automatic ‘03 Bora 2.3l V5 that’s just ticked over 100k kms. Pretty lucky to have such low kms at that age and I’ve made sure she’s been looked after over the last 18 months, was a bit neglected by last owner, just took her for her 100k service and she’s still going strong.

Looking to start off with some mods that will help with handling and give her a smoother ride. Not looking for too much in the way of engine performance, but I do like to drive and I know suspension makes all the difference.

Any tips on whether a good set of coil overs are the way to go, any suggestions would be appreciated!!

My V5 had a fair bit of understeer and body roll. Upgrading the rear swaybar is a good start.

BC or ST coilovers are a good bang for buck. I had a good experience with SoloWerks as well but you have to source them from the US. $500US + $250US postage (roughly $900 - $1,000 AU landed) isn't bad though.

Of course there's no point fitting up new coilovers to old bushes. ECS refresh kit recommended to compliment the coilovers if you go that route.

      Cheers mate!

I’ve actually just had my control arm bushes changed, but agree a full refresh kit looks like the way to go when I do decide to get the coilovers

Any recommendations on where to source an upgraded sway bar?

Usually places, Gumtree or FleeBay. H&R, Eibach or Whiteline (Link below). Harding Performance are up in Brissie they might be able to help. Could always try the WTB classifieds here on the forums as well.
