What year is it? I have seen 1998 model CLs with electric windows and dual chamber lights. I reckon VW were using up the last Mk3 bits they had.

Cl's have non-colour coded side mirrors and also have a non-adjustable steering column.

my cl has non-colour coded mirrors, no window electrics, no sun roof. It used to have single chamber headlights (now it has dual lens ones.) and it does actually have an adjustable column. by definition, the only thing that defines the model is the engine size. If it is 1.8L, (1798cc) then it is a CL. 2L, its a GL, v6 engine and it is a VR6...

Well, this is strange. Might have opened a can of worms here!

I have the adjustable steering column, electric windows, central locking, electric mirrors and electric sunroof. It has colour coded bumpers and wing mirrors and its a '96 model. Also the dash illumination on the dials is blue, whereas the buttons on the heater system are green.

So, where does this put me?

I'll check the engine cover soon, and have another look at the badge in the daylight. Its def a 1.8L too.....well it is on the rego papers!

I wouldn't worry to much about what is says on the papers.
Iv'e got a late 96 mod GL and the papers also say 1.8. Everything is original GL
so I can only think it was an oversite from the first registration.

Or maybe they just figured that 0.2 of a ltr didn't matter in the power stakes.

That sounds like what i have. The badge on the rear is def. GL and i popped the hood and the top of the engine is silver with a black box to the left, plus the big intake on the far left. No cover.

Once i snap pics this weekend i'll get them up and clear up the issue.

Maybe i do have a 2.0L in which case, more power and more mods

if you have a 1.8L then it is a CL.

I could put VR6 badges on my boot and grill, but it would still be a CL...

If it really is a 2.0L GL, and you crash and try to make a claim, the powers that be are going to go over your car and they may find out that the engine size doesn't match the rego papers. When that happens, you will be up the proverbial creek.

lets close this pandora's box shall we?
Here are some images of MK3 engine bays. they are slightly modified in someways, but you will be able to tell the difference

(click on the images for a bigger look)

VR6 (note the big shiny manifold)

GL (note the smaller manifold and big "2.0" on top)

                CL (notice the black manifold)

Now you all have some homework

Pity thats an ABA crossflow head from the states and not the 2e counter flow in an all aussie GL's. I'll get a picture of a 2e now...

                    Ahh, now i see.

I think i can confirm that i have the CL with a GL badge. But i'm de-badging it soon anyways, so that's ok.

Thanks for the lesson. I am now more educated

Your not the only one, I've seen GL's with CL badging and even worse theres a Vento in my suburb that has Passat GL on the back

Get in there mate, heat gun and dental floss and you'll be alright with those badges

Sounds like u have a GL to me. This is a 2.0l:

                        This is a 1.8L:

One thing that is common with cl's is that the rear hatch trim is textured whereas the gl + vr6 is colour coded.

Argh, now my brain is confused. The 2.0L looks like mine..i think.

Ok, i'm gonna snap a photo in a minute and post it to try and clear this up for us all.

Its funny how we're trying to work this out.

I certainly feel welcome on the MK3 side now

                              Ok,

here we have it. Direct from my engine bay. let's hope this helps:

To me, that looks like a 2.0L so i guess i should get the rego papers corrected or stand to lose the lot in the event of an accident.

But it does mean one thing.......more power!!
