Yeah when the cam belt is changed there is a little trick whenm fitting to make sure the dizzy doesnt turn. Very common, i didnt even think to mention as i thought i would be a given to check the timing but silly me hey it still happens out there a lot. Once saw a Cat Glow red due to that and it was gutless. Anyone who wants to know that little trick to stop it when fittimng cam belt i am happy to compile a Jmac install guide to cam belts.

Go for it. I've never had any trouble with the way i do it but i'd be keen to see what you have to say, being a mechanic, and by the sound of it, a GOOD one, which is uncommon.

If the cambelt has been changed, it is possible that the intermediate shaft has rotated and knocked the timing out.

Thanks loon and Gavin and everyone else, with this rotation of the dissy what way do you do it? Clockwise/anti-clockwise? And can you do this whilst the car is running or do you have to make an increment and then restart the car?

Try it a little one way and then the other and see if it makes an improvement.

It depends on whether your intermediate shaft has been advanced or retarded, if it is out, that is.

You can do it with the car running but why bother? Its easier with it off.

Ahh right fair enough, as for the shaft, all the timing belt/pulley/tensioner was changed so its all back in its right place and aligned right. If the dissy doesn't help then I'll have it taken in for another look and I'll be sure to mention the intermediate shaft advance/retard aspect as well .

This is definately it, I moved my distributor once to try and reduce the pinging I was having and I buggered it up..I wrote a thread about it "mk3 bounce"
i'll see if I can find it?

                found it..

Does this sound more than a little strange to most folk? My 1997 2.0 had a cam belt service yesterday, new water pump, tensioner pulley. Which is fine, all went well. I should mention here that it was done in my garage by my mechanic (best mate) who really is a mechanic and with me helping out. It was noted that my car was

Haha I loved the nostalgic petrol prices, I remember in 02 when they were 78c per liter as well, any my friend's dad complaining about 88c optimax for his VY clubsport

Ill do a Jmac Timing belt thread and note the trick to keeping that timing in check, its very easy but if you dont know how it all works it makes life tricky as the dizzy is driven at the same speed as the cam and actually has the same pulley!!!! But does free wheel when the belt is off.
Stay tuned for that and good luck with yours mate

No you can adjust it by taking out the 13mm bolt and bracket by the dissy and adjusting it to where the car runs and revs nicely.

Your dissy will have 2 pins which may impede you putting the bolt back in where you want to. Id simply pull it out, or chissel it off with a sharp screwdriver and a hammer.

Or you can bugger with the timing belt.........

Not really if its not done right. Perhaps you should take it somewhere else where they will set the dissy up correctly.
