Urgent help!!!

My poor 97 cl golf 5 spd manual is playing up! I turned at the roundabout last night it was a sharp one but when i got around it i went onto the freeway on ramp then all of a sudden the car just died and didnt turn back on. Now the cars stuck on the side of the road. Need help with any ideas please.!

Check your battery terminals? May be a dumb question I know but worthwhile checking?

I checked all them they were a little loose but wasnt the problem. The car cranks over fine all electrics are fine it feels like it wants to start just doesnt. Even tried hitting the fuel pump and starting it.

The car has a weird smell to it as if i fried something though, and when i first tried to start it all weird noises were comming out of the exhaust.
