Gearbox options for 2L or engine/box conversion?

Hi all,
My wife's cabrio has a diff/gearbox issues.
Struggling to find a replacement box and wondering if I should just bolt in a mk4 4 cylinder and box.
If you could point me towards a good box or have suggestions as to what else I could do, Ie engine conversation, please let me know.
