Help! Oil part that I can't name is broken!

Hi,

This oil filter part has broken for the 2nd time. I had previously cleaned it up and used JB Weld to glue it back together but alas it has completely snapped off again. I seem to be going through more oil that usual so need to work out a fix for it. Has anyone replaced it with an aftermarket piece? Does anyone have a spare one off an old engine? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm located in Sydney.

PCV, get a new generic length of pipe and JB weld it.

Find part similar to this one PCV Valve Elbow - Dorman (47037) , any part will do, just make sure you can get it to fit. Should be able to find it cheap.

i have seen images of people just putting one of these oil breathers straight onto the outlet from the engine?
mine is also broken.. is this a simple cheap solution?

Considering oil vents from the crankcase from that outlet, that small filter will become oily very quickly unless it's good enough to to keep oil inside the crankcase and only let the pressure escape from there.

Idea is when the crankcase vents some oil is let out as a vapour. This then goes through the PCV and then back into the system via the intake. On other cars this is where people attach their oil catch can if they don't want spent oil cycling back into the system.

That's the quick fix, blocking off the intake side and popping on one of those breathers, but like stefcio mentioned and as you can imagine, they will get drenched with oil very quickly.

You could delete the PCV and run an oil catch can? Basically run a hose to the inlet of the oil catch can from the engine side and connect the outlet with the intake. Does the same thing as the PCV does basically, but instead of having a dirty intake, it'll all go in the catch can which you should empty every service.

is that the oil catch can down under the air filter? does the oil travel all that way? there is also another hose that connects to a tiny pipe on the intake side of the PCV. Is that important? I'm going for another JB Weld just to buy some time but like the idea of the catch can...

I just ran took the PCV off and ran a hose between the breather and the intake

im guessing that tiny pipe you are talking about is the feed to the carbon canisiter?

I used this on my previous VR6

I recently had to do one again on my Vento but this time went with a brand new oem replacement like the one from ecs

be aware that if you do buy a new unit it is only sold as complete with the intake boot/elbow and that there are 2 different models for the Australian delivered cars

Correct, that's the catch can down near the air filter. The intake side of the PCV is joined to the outlet of the catch can. It is against emission laws to vent the engine vapours to the atmosphere so the proper way to do it is to connect the catch can to the intake. A good catch can should have baffles inside which trap the oil.

The PCV is there to regulate pressure within the engine, it's not meant to be a passage for oil. The build-up in pressure within the engine causes air (and with it, oil and oil vapour) to flow from the engine to the intake.

Had my JB weld fail today after about 1.5 years.
Temp fix with parts lying around.


The top small tube goes all the way to a canister at the front of the car and then back again through an clear tube. It has electrical plugs so must be checking for something, but what does it do?
Wondering what fix I should do this time.

Small clear tube is the fuel tank breather which gets fed into the charcoal canister and the back into the intake.
I removed this all and put a breather before the clear tube starts, and removed the pcv aswell. No idea what the plug checks but i only get one code with it all unplugged lel. Makes for a cleaner bay, also means it is very easy to have a CAI.

Yeah, where the canister is, is where I want to pull air from. The whole 2 tube setup appears to be doing nothing at all.
The other end of my clear tube seems to disappear somewhere close to the firewall.

It just feels like this whole thing has been over engineered.

2 . It's not really meant to do a great deal so not sure what your hoping for?
