  • New Member, Saying Hi

Hi, I am new to the watercooled VW's, I have had numerous aircooled and still have a split kombi I am restoring.
Just got myself a tatty 96 classic, 4 door 1.8
I hate the standard 4 spoke mags it has.
What or where in Adelaide is the cheapest place to get some BBS copies or something decent and a bit bigger than 13"s.
Also what is the best diameter that will fit without scrubbing or fouling the guards.
    Thanks
    Dave

Hi Dave, and welcome aboard! I think we have a member in your neighbour hood with a set of genuine BBS's for sale. Try that link and see if they are the one's your after.

I'm sure one of the Mk3 brigade will be along shortly to answer your questions.

Oh, and a standard tradition to all our new members. Pic's or ban! lol.

    Welcome aboard.

Thanks Garath but the link doesnt seem to work??

Heres a couple of questions, I dont know if its right to ask them here, but??

What size wheels look best, 14's or 15's, also what width?/

I also want to lower it a bit, whats the cheapest way?
          Can you just cut springs??

As I said I am not used to this watercooled stuff so will need loads of advice.

Has anyone tried the cheap mags advertised by bob Jane T-Marts??
I can get a set with tyres in 14inch for $599.
Anyone go any pics of cars with the 14's and a bit lowered, I still need to carry two little kids in the back.
          Thanks from a total novice
          Dave

            6 or 7 by 15 work well on MK3s with 195/50 or 205/50 tyres.

Can we assume you are from Merseyside??

                      Thanks for the answers.
                      yes from Merseyside.
Dont want to spend the money on the lowering just yet.
Only thinking out loud at the moment, only picked the car up today.
Think I will go wheels first, the originals look so dated.

                        Welcome to the forum mate.
Nice to see more SA members
As Robin said, $500 will hook you up with a full set of coilovers so you can lower the car how you want, when you want. Well worth the money and by far one of the cheapest and most effective way of setting your car up for looks and handling.
Wheels, id say a set of 15 or 16 by 7s would be sufficient, 8s if your feeling adventurous, but good luck finding something decent in 4x100 stud pattern around Adelaide that arent cheap aussie crap!! Steer away from the Bob Jane sold wheels if possible
Get some pics up, and come out for a cruise soon. Thinking of organising one in the near future, be nice to see some MK3's out with us having a blat around the hills etc etc

Welcome Scouser! Pics of your cars (a few of the aircooled wouldn't be considered blasphemy ) would be great!

As most have said already, 15's and 16's work well. Most 7" wide examples in 4x100 will sit pretty on the Mk3 with no worries with tyre or fender scrubbage (provided the right-sized tyres are fitted on!).

As for where to get decent cheap ones, try the wreckers and look for BMW E30 wheels. They were in the same stud pattern and centrebore size so they would be a sure fit. Other small Jap cars from the 80's and 90's like Civics and Toyota MR2 also had the same stud pattern.
                          Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
                          Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

                            Hey Dave,

Unless you desperately need tyres, you may have this backwards. Coilovers are $500!!! Previously you would have paid $2.5-$4k for the privilege. Plus if you switch to coilovers there will be host of handling and even comfort benefits which you may have not considered. The shocks on your car now are most likely worn right?? Also if you fit new rims and tyres on old suspension you will get premature tyre wear.

                            Coilovers FTW!!

If you really need convincing we can probably arrange recent pictures of Seans car, not lowered, with rims.

                            GOOD LUCK!
