  • URGENT: Help Needed

    Went to start the car up tonight and heard quite a large pop. Looked under the bonnet and it seems some plastic casing had come off what im imagining is a vacuum pipe. The car iddling was terrible but when we blocked up the hose outlet that was previously covered by the part that blew off it idled fine. Hence we blocked it up with a rag and drove home .Below are some pics showing the rag blocking the hose outlet. Any help regarding exactly what has happened or how it can be fixed would be much appreciated!

    The isv damper. not important. just read on dom, from the website vwhowto.

    The plastic box near the throttle body connected to the ISV on OBD1 VR6 motors is the ISV damper. It keeps the ISV a little quiter. Without it you might hear a slight whistle, whine, or airflowing past the ISV when the ISV is in use.

    OBD2 VR6 motors have the Idle Stabilizer Valve built into the throttle body, so this quickie how to does not abbly to newer VR6 motors, or 24v VR6.

    THE CAUSE:
    the ISV damper is right above the exhaust manifold and gets pretty hot. Well, that and time allow the idle stabilizer valve damper to crack. I've hear reports of them blowing apart also. Anyway, they get weak and break.

    THE FIX:
    Remove it. Take it off and chuck it. The volkswagen dealer can get you a new one, but whats the point? If your engine cover is in the way, remove it first. Take the ISV damper of, and completely remove the two hoses connected to it. Leave the Idle Stabilizer Vale on. Take the longer of the two hose and cut it so that it connects the ISV back up without the use of the ISV damper box.

    All Done. Go Drive.

        Thats the idle stabliser. NO biggie from what I heard. Happened to mickey a few months back too.

          omg thats exactly what happened with mine lol. yeah my mechanic couldnt do it today but he said if i seal off the outlet it should be fine to drive for now. does that sound ok?

              iv just bypassed it(blocked it) for now and im looking for a new isv now from someone on the forum or perhaps the dreaded dealership.

                Thats the idle stabliser
                its not the idle stabliser. If it was, you most likely would not be able to drive it or it would be running terrible. They cost in excess of $200. The idle stabliser is the cylinder looking unit that is under the engine trim beside the throttle body. The ISV damper or PCV damper is the thing that blew up on your car dom and it comes of the idle stabliser to silence the noise level of the stabliser.

                its a common thing on VRs as it is directly above your exhaust manifold and gets too hot and frail. only OBD1 engines had em.

                can be replaced at a cost of around $50.
                heres a pic of it. this shot shows the heat shield that is on the bottom of the damper.


                But you can bypass it and it will still work fine

                    just the damper mate. the little plastic box with and inlet and outlet pipe.

                    have you tried running the car with it bypassed?

                      Bypass it dont block it mate.
                      I`d have a second hand one for $30 if you like, but I`d bypass it on my car.

                        Dom dude! It happened to me, my retard of a friend broke mine while attempting to start my car in first with the clutch out...retard...

                        I went to supercheap and test-fitted a thick water hose pipe that i ended up buying for like 7.99, which was as easy as plugging it in to re-create the vacuum. I've got half of my hose left if you want it haha..come and i'll help you do it.
