Side vents?

Upon removing the rear bumper I came across these vents with flaps on either side.
Spiders liked to live here. What are they for?

I think they are for the ventilation flow. Fresh air flows from front to back & out there I think. Without them you'd have trouble closing the doors without slamming them. (well from new anyway)
