  • Help - Car wont start

Hi guys and gals. My 1996 GL 2 litre wont start. It turns over but just wont start. I know its getting petrol cos I can smell it after turning it over for long periods. I have tried pumping the accelerator but that does not help either. Any suggestions
    cheers

Mate there is a little collection of things but one i would look at is the coil as you clearly buy the sounds are getting fuel. Try a substitute coil mate.
I hate to ask this question - im sure others would cringe but ive got to ask - How Fast is the engine turning over???????
Ok the bad question is out the way if you say turns over normal slam a coil on mate.

Where abouts are u located? If its got fuel, then the next thing is spark. I would test the coil by pulling off the wire that goes to the dizzy and putting it close to the block, then get someone to crank. U should see a nice healthy spark going across. Ignition coils are known to cause problems too so ur not the first one if it is!

Peedman is right, but meant to say hold the spark plug lead with pliers or something rubber to avoid shock

LOL, Dont worry i will do that. I have been given a large enough zap years ago from a 1971 Capri I used to own. I will try that. Should have thought about it before. To answer the other question. It cranks over pretty quick. Battery has plenty of power in it. I thought it may have been the key. I have read things on here about the key having a transponder or something which matched to the ignition.

Oh, I am from Adelaide South Australia

If your immobilizer is getting screwey, just disconnect your negative terminal. Then hook it back up and start the car. Recently this happened to me. It's a long shot, but I once had a merc that didn't start due to vapor lock! So anything is possible..

Mate if it was the immobiliser in anyway the vehicle will still fire run briefly and cut out. My money is on the Coil. When turning over fast it should still sound normal mate. If it whizzes over then the you may have a timing belt issue. But lets not go there - Cmon Jimmy its just a lost spark mate he needs a coil!!!
Dont mind me i get carried away
                  Good luck

Couldnt be timing belt, just had that replaced as well as waterpump and the tensioner. When it stops raining I will check the coil pack. Are they expensive?

Not big money in the UK but I haven't had to buy one here.

Have you tried turning it over with the centre lead from the dissy near an earth?

If that sparks then the coil and hall sender are good and you need to look at the plugs cap and leads, if it doesn't then you need to suspect the hall sender in the dissy and the coil.

There is a test for the dissy involving an LED, you shove one down the back of the plug on the dissy and crank it. As it spins the output is enough to light up the LED, proving it is OK.

If you are stuck with substitution then a coil would probably be easiest.

Imparts on Main North Rd probably have one on the shelf.

Whereabouts in Adelaide do you live?

                      Gavin

Some of the earlier engines never had the G28 guys(engine speed sender). The ones that dont, have 4 windows in the dizzy and the ones who do have only one window for reference point for no1 cylinder. If you do have an Engine speed sender on yours then that also is a possibilty as VW tech says the wiring goes brittle and breaks.
Imparts do stock coils and they are very reasonable mate.
My suggestion is when you get the thing running buy yourself a spare coil mate as they are so common for failing.
                          Cheers

My car 2L died last Tuesday and it was the coil pack, the car would tick over but refuse to start. The dizzy cap and the leads were corroded (10,000km old) but that wasn't the culprit.

Not a cheap thing to fix I'm afraid

Its 120 for an oem ignition coil from tooley imports, i picked up one cheap for about $50 from ebay

Getting it from the US would also be cheaper but ud have to wait for shipping tho.
