  • I may have a VAG problem...

I may have a VAG problem!
The second i picked up my Bora 4Mo, i was on the lookout for a cheaper VAG project to put some money into and to save some K's on the Bora.
Now that the Bora has had a once over with the exhaust, wheels and suspension wand, it was time to find a new VAG!

Came across this beastie yesterday afternoon and bought it at 10pm last night.
Now i know you should never buy a car in the dark but at the asking price, i was not too worried. The only real surprise i got was that it was purple and not blue as the online photo's made it look. Not a big deal.

It has a few niggly issues such as a sometimes faulty guage cluster and occaisional starter motor problem. It also hase some sort of leak in the central locking pump thing where it continues to run for about 30 seconds after being activated.
There is some terrible rear window tint bubbling and some paint fade on the bonnet but otherwise, it is in pretty good physical condition. Not sure if i will leave the roof racks on it or not yet.

There is a huge difference in the feel of the the gearbox throw compared to my 4Mo though. It is like rowing a boat compared to the Bora!
Is this common or should i look at a selector/linkage replacement or even a short shift style kit?

    Anyway, picture!

The guy said something about it being limited edition. Not sure if he was referring to the color or maybe just VR6's being thin on the ground compared to other model. Can anyone comment on this?

Looks nice, I've got the same roof racks.

Yes the gear throw is like stirring a bag of rags... I think the most common thing is people switching it out with a mk4 shifter? Dylan8 just did it with his Vento I believe so he would be a good person to ask.

Look forward to seeing what you do with it, I wish I had a VR6

Can switch to mk4 shifter but without all the diesel geek gear its about the same.

I used a gruvenparts side to side kit and welded a solid plate on the for aft cable. Fair bit nicer. Yet to install my b&m short shifter.

        I see no problem here.
Hmm, special edition? VR6's are special You're missing the BBS wheels though. Looks to be built around the same year as mine (square side indicator is the giveaway).

Thanks guys, ,i'll look into the shifter mod some time in the future.

Am i right in saying that these are Polo rims of some sort? I'll be putting my 4Mo rims on it soon then maybe some cheap coilovers.
Then i'll do the cat back on the exhaust and in the mean time, i'll just tidy it up a bit and look into the known problems.

          Also needs a rear seat...bad!

P.S. Your right, i might not have a problem right now but i'm trying lol.
          An A3 next maybe?

Can recommend the mk4 shifter, there is a thread on here recently about it.
Doesn't reduce throw etc, Just makes it feel tighter and more precise.

Check what tubbs76 did with the polo parts too

OK NOW i have a VAG problem but it is an actual problem(or 3) with the Golf it's self.

So i tried the Bora 4Mo rims on. Scrubbed like a bitch they would need lower profile tires or some 5-10mm spacers if i want to use them the way they are.

Also noticed that my brake pad sensor wire has been severed at some point. Recently by the look of it too.

And last but certainly not lease, i had to drive 40km in 3rd gear this arvo to get home. The gearbox crunched going into 3rd and then would not come back out again. An interesting drive to say the least.
I'm not exactly sure what the part is that snapped though? If somebody could take a look and let me know what and where to order this/these parts, that would be very much appreciated.

Something has defiantly come undone or broken on the selector. Can you move the shifter from inside the car?
4mo tyres will be far to big.
Put 205/45/16s, wheels are the same width and offset as stock vr if I recall correctly so shouldn't need spacers (unless you want them)

Yep! The shifter moves from within the cabin but feels all sorts of wrong.
That flat bracket in the lower half of the photo looks to have snapped off. I need to dig up a factory diagram to see if i can identify the correct part number. I would not think that part comes with any short/quick shifter offerings?

Don't really want to change the tires on the 4Mo rims in case i need to put them back on the Bora at some stage. Probably just buy some second hand rims to suit when i see something suitable come up on the Gumtrees.

It's funny how things work out. Just as my FK order gets shipped, the Golf goes off the road for a while lol.

EDIT: This bloke seems to have a very similar problem only his complete bracket has snapped off. It must have an upper and lower section that joins the 2 parts together. Mine has only snapped off on the upper part leaving the lower section intact.

My FK order finally arrived and it had some of the correct parts for the Mk3.

I ordered a couple of strut top stuts for the VR6 and the Bora but neither of them fit neither car. I'll add them to the pile of gear i need to offload.
New engine mounts and gearbox mount were purchased but have yet been installed. I'll leave that for a long weekend.

The shifter issues have been sorted. Replaced the broken part but need some slight adjustments to make 1st, 3rd and 5th engage smoother. I also ordered a new shifter bush and rubber washer and solid shifter bracket mounts but i have not fitted any of that stuff yet. The main concern was getting it back on the road and i succeeded at that.

I also fitted new clear, clear, red tail lights, smoked front indicators and have a set of headlights to go in also when i get 4x H7 bulbs for them. Sorry but i forgot to take a photo of the indicators... another day when the head lights are in

                    Pic...

That is all for now. Still no progress on the previously mentioned headlights, engine mounts etc...
