2L clutch / clutch cable issues

Doing the self adjusting cable check on my GL, depressed the clutch pedal 5 + times, then pushed clutch lever down to make sure it has the "at least 10mm movement" thing happening. this seems to be OK but do you only get one chance at pushing the clutch lever down to check the movement? Once I press the lever down & then release it again, I then get zero movement until I depress the clutch 5 times again. Is this the normal way it operates?

Have begun to get a slight slipping of the clutch & wanted to check that the adjustment of the cable is not causing the problem before I dive into a clutch change.

have you tried pushing the lever down at the gearbox ?? I adjust the old Seat Cordy one on it. or is it a new cable??
how many kms on the clutch Brendon?

Hey B, old cable old clutch, no idea on KMs, I think that the clutch is shagged, but just want ed to make sure it wasn't the cable before I launched into a job the size of the clutch replacement.

I can only get one push down on the lever before it goes tight. then I need to do the whole "depress the clutch 5 times" routine before I cn move the lever down again.

Been nursing the clutch for a few weeks now, & getting closer to needing the work to be done.

Still tossing up as to whether I do it at home or pay someone to do it for me, but in the mean time would like to clarify what parts I "need" to be replaced & what bits I probably "should" be replaced while I or they have the bloody thing apart to save on dramas down the track.

I come from the wonderful world of aircooled dubs where things are a whole lot simpler than these golfs are.

Need to be replaced / done:
- clutch & pressure plate
- pressure pate to crank bolts
- flywheel machined

Should do while I'm at it?
- pressure plate to flywheel bolts?
- rear main oil seal, including oil seal flange gasket & oil pan gasket
- transmission input shaft seal
- clutch push rod seal
- clutch push rod bushing
- throw out bearing

Anything I've missed or anything that is definitely a "need" rather than a "should". Or anything that I shouldn't worry about. When I'm ordering parts do I need to lay out everything I need or is there kits available that will have most of the stuff in it.

I have no mechanical history for the car & it has 300000km's on the clock.

Recommended clutch brands? Only a daily driver not a track beast....

Any idea what this would job should cost to get done professionally, just so I have a guide for when I get some quotes?

How good is the car for you to spnd $750.

clutch kits are cheap
I have a used 1.8L clutch and flywheel incl bolts we can look at using
also a bushing for cheap. I am not sure of the drvn plate.
my first clutch did 195,000 Kms but mainly hwy Kms 2nd one did 138.then I sold it..!

yeah that's the thing, I'll probably end up doing it myself due to costs.

Thanks for the offer Bern, but if I'm going to do this job I'm not going to stuff around with used parts, been bitten a few times using use parts for things like this.
