Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Window died.. anyone help with advice/parts?

So last week my drivers side window **** itself. It had started to play up slightly by deciding as I was putting it up to change its mind and go down on occasion, now it doesn't go down completely (its all the way up thank gawd)

It makes a clicking noise when you press the switch but doesn't move, so I am assuming regulator/motor or both?

Anyone help me out with some cheap spares?

All I know is when I use the button something clicks but doesn't move

and TODAY the back left one won't go up, you can hear it all work but just doesn't go up but does go, but you can lift it up and down via hand

      blah

if you can hear the motor working its usually just a bit of plastic that has failed.

Its probably the Reg, you'll need to take the inner trim off and test run it. Regs can be found at most wreckers (new and 2nd), this is a know issue with VW's.

dumb question, is the regulator and the motor two different parts?

Yes. I have just replaced the regulator on my wife's Polo. A lot of fiddly work & $180 for the regulator. I spoke the parts guy who said anything with a cable regulator will eventually fail. A friend who is a mechanic said most cars now use this system, Toyota, Hyundai even his Mercedes E class. My plastic slide failed, same as the link in vortex. After I bought the new assy. I found the plastic slide is available separately on EBay.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

yes, two different parts. The two green bits and the yellow bit, those are the bits that usually go
