newbie with a paint colour question

Hi all, I just purchased a 1996 Golf GL Classic. It has a lot of k's but it still runs well. The previous owner lived off a gravel/dirt road. Plenty of stone chips on one side of the car. I went to match the colour and the guy over the counter exolained that there were a lot of colour variant =s of metallic blue in that year, Just wondering if any of oyu out there know the name of this colour and the paint code. Hopefully you can tell from the picture. Secondly, when I put her in reverse and back up. I get like a scraping noise from the left front wheel. Like a bad bearing or something. Yet it seems ok when driving forward. I am sure I will have more questions as I work on the car.

When am I getting those headlight surrounds off you to get painted?

mate have a look in your boot for the paint code. should be a little white paper stuck to the body with paint code, engine code etc...

Mine is located in the boot just under the hatch.

Same here. Should be a 4 character code (combination of letters and numbers), but usually starting with the letter L.

If the previous owner provided you with the original servicing logbook, the white sticker should also be located just behind the front cover.

Welcome Wagits! With a 246,000kms your 2.0 is not yet run in. If you do match the colour you should paint your rear hatch spoiler too! Hope your enjoying the car so far, your in the right place.

Thanks guys. I am contemplating whether I should continue sprucing her up or not. It needs a few things done.

That sound from the front when reversing its sounds like having a piece of cardboard stuck in bike spokes as I reverse. i amy check to see if its grabbing onto something.
I would like to get the front seats re-ulphostered, has anyone done this. Can you buy skins and replace the ones already on the car?
Fix and paint one side of the car where it is splattered with stone chips and a fine scrape on every panel on the drivers side.
A new stereo system. have you guys seen the all in one single din units on EBay- Bluetooth, 4.3 inch display, dvd etc player, ipod connection, sd/usb slots, tv tuner and last but not least, a radio. Anyone have something like that.
Re-cover the headlining. I have done this in an old Alfa 75 I had, and I must admit, turned out great.
I think I am missing sound deadening under the bonnet. Do the Golfs come with this.
Then I would like to get to the suspension, lower it a bit, new shocks and then maybe some 16inch/17inch rims depending on cost. I see its pretty hard to get wheels to go on the 4 stud Golfs.
Oh and one more thing, a nice leather steering wheel. Again may be tough finding a nice one, especailly since I found out that its illegal to replace an airbagged wheel with a non-airbagged one.
I must admit, with 246,000 km's on the clock, it drives surprisingly well, no smoke, plenty of pull, although I suspect a slight exhaust leak somehere. Hopefully not a cracked manifold.

Sounds like a great list you have there Wagits,

Suspension should be first, or you'll wreck your new tyres. There are heaps and heaps of 17's that will fit 4x100 golfs. Most sets can be had for very close to $1000 including budget low profile tyres. Have a look at www.tempetyres.com.au for pricing purposes.

There is no sound deadening under the bonnet.

The headliner is an easy mod, many on here have done it. I took mine out altogether because I have a 7inch monitor up there.

I changed my GL seats for Vr6 ones, which several people on here have also done. You can get your existing steering wheel covered in leather by a motor trimmer for pretty cheap too.

Most of the mods you listed have been done several times by a lot of the super friendly MK3 guys on here. So just do a search or check out previous threads. Better to do it nice, than do it twice.

One last thing...Best mod for a 2.0 MK3, is a VR6 front lip. $80ish bucks adds all the tough!
