Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • ABS question after swapping VR6 rear beam into my 3dr.

So i'm half way through converting my MK3 to 5x100 and i have a couple of questions regarding the ABS.

My car is a 1996 model 2dr golf (4 stud) which had rear drum brakes with ABS and now i've put in the VR6 rear beam which also ran ABS.

Obviously the car now has new rear ABS sensors on it which are to suit discs and not drums and they plugged straight into the existing loom by the connections under the back seat.

    Here lies my questions........

1 - Will my current ABS module only recognise the original drum sensors and therefor now throw up the ABS light?
    or
2 - If i scan the car and clear the fault codes, is there a chance it will recognise the new sensors and not throw the dash light again?

I have a feeling i know the answer but i was hoping someone else may have come across this situation and may be able to shed some more light on it for me.

    Cheers

      What year is your's drucejnr?

I'm yet to come across another 2dr in OZ with abs as standard on the rear.

This is how mine was essentially set up in the rear

Build date September '95, released April '96.

Yeah I find it odd that you have ABS considering we have rear drums...

            Not at all.

Only got a break line going to the rear of my car, no ABS sensors. Will be installing the ABS module with the VR swap though.

Original buyer of the car would have probably opted for the abs option.
It be pretty stupid for VW to not have such a item as a option, if not a standard feature.

It seems the more i ask around, the more mine seems to be the only one i know of that came with rear ABS which is kinda cool.

Can understand that drum brakes (old technology) having abs ('new' technology) can confuse people. Me included I never would have thought it would exist.

                    Definitely cool.
