Golf VR6 tyre advise for standard 15" BBS rims

I would love some advice on tyre choice.

I was about to replace the Goodyear Eagle F1's on my '94 VR6 with a new set, only to find out that Goodyear have changed these and no longer make the 205/50R15 86V to suit the VR6's standard BBS rims. This is disappointing as I have really liked these tires. I have discovered that this is typical across all brands when looking at their high performance tires.

As I don't want to put larger rims (as seems to be the current fad) on my car I have done a lot of web review searching and have come up with the following short-list that do a 205/50R15 86V:

1. Michelin Pilot Preceda PP2
2. Bridgestone Adrenalin Potenza RE001
3. Goodyear Eagle NCT5

Do any other VR6 owners have any experience and/or opinions on the above? I'm open to other suggestions as well.

Can't comment on the tyres you mention. I have Nexan 3000s on my Ibiza and can't fault them nor the Kuhmo SPTs on my A3.

I commend you for retaining 15s, IMO going bigger spoils the ride and handling.

Putting 16s on my A3 to go over the big brakes knocked the acceleration noticeably. Had to do it though to control the power I am after.

I gave up looking for 205/50's and now run 195/50's. I have noticed no degridation in grip, but i have noticed an improvment in responce. also, they seem ride more firmly too.

I'm using a Fulda Carat Attiro 195/50r 15.

Even though they were worn, my rears were wrapped in Pilot Preceda's. I thought they were great, but because they were in need of replacement I didn't think they were very grippy. I'd go Michelin though, I've only heard good things about them!

I too run Nexen 3000s and dont really like them. Not when my last set of rubber was Pirelli P Zero Nero (!!).

Michelin or Bridgestone wouldnt be bad. Go for it.

Happy with Michelin's

I ended up going for the Michelin Pilot Preceda PP2's two weeks ago and am amazed at a couple of unexpected bonuses with their performance. As I would have hoped, their grip and handling are excellent - no torque steer even in the wet (unlike Yokohama's). The bonus points are that they are amazingly quiet and also 'softer' ... as in bumps and sharp joints etc on poor road surfaces don't jar through to the driver as much. I would highly recommend these to anyone with a VR6.

Since Dad fitted BF goodriches to the front of the golf with 15x6.5 rims on it, it has been very sensitive to tyre pressures, they have to be exact each side or it will pull and follow the road. Very annoying, previously used Kumho's IIRC, either way scrubbed out the insides very quick (<20k) but it's been aligned properly now.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I am going to be getting new tyres soon and I called a place I can tell you the name if required, and they quoted me $269 per tyre for the Michelin Pilot Preceda PP2

I know these are high end tyres, but they're 15".... man they had had 235's in their catalogue for sale for $229 or something like that.

What kind of prices should I be expecting for a decent tyre?

yeah coz I had read guys were getting their tyres for 15's really cheap... I spoke to jax too...

anyway I would like to get the adrenalins but I want 205's not 195's.

I'll call a couple of places tomorrow about these tyres... I'll let you guys know

A good price IMO, but not the same tire. Firstly its a 195 vs a 205 and there a quite a few adrenalin variants...
