A lot of Mk3 owners have contemplated this but I don't think anyone has ever had it done here. It's expensive, and for the money you could get a 2nd hand in decent condition with cash left over or just go for a Mk3.5 Cabrio one.

mine is knacked and I got a quote to see how much it was to recover in leather. The guy said about $250-$300. He now doesnt really do then anymore because it is such a time consuming and hard job. (by hand)

He had even taken steering wheels home sometimes and done them because it just takes so long, not to mention the needles he used to go thro in one wheel.

This is very similar to the Cabrio wheel (without the woodgrain):

Oli had one of these a few weeks ago and it sold for close to $500.

The wheel is from the Mk3.5 Cabriolet! The one with the Mk4 front. Only they had that wheel that would also fit the Mk3.

                      Cabby wheel is real nice.

Rather than having the whole wheel restitched how about getting a strip of black leather and having it stitched on over the old leather?
It will be a bit more chunky and should be a cheaper option.

Or score one of those covers that you can stitch on yourself if you can get them in leather.

getting leather stitched over it sounds a bit dodgy rather get the one off ebay looks pretty good too

I put an Isotta tailor made cover on mine. They're pre cut to size and shape, you just stitch em on over the stock wheel. They look pretty good and are made from top quality Italian leather and feel is real nice. Mine was about $90 from memory, got it off US Ebay from a seller called "Crowder's Customising", he's got an Ebay store i think. Will post some pics when I get a chance.
