Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

well, my coolant light started flashing on the way to work friday so after i let it cool down i topped up the bottle. the overflow bottle was milky, the oil looked ok but was milky on the edge of the dipstick higher up. forgot to check under the cap. got home fine, light didn't come on. wife and i went out and i had to move my car and when i did the light came on again. checked everything again today and was pretty bad under the oil cap. car has never overheated on me and always runs at half way ( temp ).

who has had to do their head gasket and do you remember how much it cost you. i've sent german auto a message off their site, hopefully they can get me in next week.

if it's going to cost 1000's, is there a bigger motor and box ( mine's a 2.0 8v ) that will fit right in that could possibly be a cheaper option?

Labour-wise, they're not too bad to do. Actually one of the easiest cars I've done. Not much in the way of parts to replace either.

Hopefully, the heads ok and not warped.

The head is usually ok, just give it a little skim to be sure. As Umai said, they are no labor intense, not much to these engines they are quite simple to do and any 'backstreet' garage should be able to get this done for you at an affordable price. Sort out a VRS kit aswell which will have the headgasket, and all other seals you need too.

      Goodluck buddy.
