  • Just bought a Golf yesterday, hellllpppp :)

    Hi Guys,

Yesterday I bought a 1996 Golf CL 1.8, the car has done 90K only but needs some repairs and a new clutch...

First thing that I noticed is that the engine is sooo weak for a 1.8 engine, may be because its only 89 hp with a damaged clutch..,

Anyways, I will fix all of that, but I want to get some performance parts like the spark plugs, coils, air filter, may be bigger injectors...just light tuning, u know... coz I got no cash ... so what and where to get these stuff from???

K&N doesn't have performance filters for this model...
What do you think of the NGK iridium, I have read that it adds 10 hp
    Coils, Splitfire? NGK?... Advice ;p
Injectors, Bosch I guess will do, may be I can get those of the 2.0 engine

    Thanks in advance boys...

hey welcome to the forum, congrats on the car too, you've come to the right place.

For spark plugs, I doubt it doesn't anything much, if you have the money to splash on them go ahead. I couldn't feel any difference after I had them in.

I had in mind CL and GL have same air box, some one please confirm.
I am sure our melb memeber would be delighted help you with shop locatiions. JUst wait.

        Hi

Fix the clutch first and release the mighty power of the 1.8
I can mail order you a clutch for $350 if you cant get one locally. 0423 051737 Camden GTI

The reason the 1.8s feel sluggish is the single injector setup that looks like a carby. You cant change the injector and the 2L has 4 of em, not one.
Filter should be the same as GL Golf, but if not, its the same as a SEAT Cordoba.

The only tuning that will make much difference is a CAM. Try a Mk2 GTI one.

Enjoy the car and revel in your wind up windows which will never break.

Welcome to the forums Mars3v Do you have a 3-door model?

Also, in reply to your K&N air filters, they DO make a replacement panel filter for your model. All the airboxes are the same size across the Mk3 models. The part number for the K&N panel air filter is 33-2069. You can also mod your stock air box to draw more air in. Check out the DIY sticky on the Mk3 forum
          Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
          Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

Thanks alot guys for this warm welcome, it touched my heart, really it did

              Soundofav6, I found u the website that said that NGK irridiums add 10 HP, I don't beleive it as well, have a look anyway;

you can also enter your car's model and year and it will show all the performance parts and accessories available for you beast.

Golf Loon, Thanks, I will fix the clutch, but what mighty power are u talkin about ...I will get back to you if I couldn't find the clutch, thanks very much.

rayray086, No I have the 5 doors one, thanks for your effort but I guess I wasn't clear enough, I want a high performance filter like the Typhoon series from K&N or cold intakes with the heat shield, but replacement filters won't do much...I checked the DIY topic, really perfect, thanks.

Water Boy I will go crazy under the bonnet, don't u worry

Guys, any idea how much a 2.0 16V engine would cost? I think its code is APF (not sure)... its 148 HP,after the mods it should be really powerful.. in my opinion, its better than the VR6 where I need to live near by a petrol station

ABF 2L 16v. Theny you need the loom and ecu and to dismantle your car and reassemble. Brobably $2500 plus labour. There were only 75 ABFs evevr sold in Oz, so good luck.

Hehehe 2.0L MkIII's are pretty sluggish too.

I'm not too sure what you give you noticeable power.... mainly intake and exhaust, just remove all restrictions and see how you go.

Thanks alot guys for your replys...Now I regret not getting a civic, although I drive germans only...but thats a lazy duck, screw all SOHC engines...

bboyskidz, not sure if u have to get any certificates, but if it is that hard, you can get the ABF engine and remove all the good stuff and install it in ur engine, like the cams, head, etc....but I think the rest of the engine will be the same...propably I will get it from germany, very cheap and you can find any thing for any german car there....
