  • Air con costs

Hi everyone, just a quick check-in. I have a Mk3 Tdi, and as part of a recent major service on the Sunshine Coast, I asked the mechanics to get the air-con re-gassed as it was becoming less and less effective last summer. The tech said that the compressor is no longer compressing.
He has quoted me $1303.50 to do the work:
    compressor - $680 + gst
    Filter dryer - $95.00
    Regas $160
    Nitrogen $10 if needed
    Fitting $240

    Does this seem reasonable?

Got my receiver dryer for $75 down here in briso. Try Imparts, they'll probably be even cheaper. Do you have to go brand new with the compressor?? plenty of mk3s being wrecked around the place (Vento being wrecked up your way on the sunny coast, check the parts forum), could always take the risk. Regas sounds about right. Are you mechanically minded? Could always do the work yourself and save on the $240 for fitting.

      Hey
I went through the same thing a little while ago on my VR6... I got quoted about the same price here in Brisbane... and at that price it nearly writes my car off

If you don't want to go down the second hand route, what I did was order a kit from the USA with the compressor , Rec / dryer and it came with all the O rings etc etc.... I landed it here for about $300, then I took it to the local air con place and they fitted it all and re gassed. I got out of it for below the cost of an Australian compressor !!!

It took a while (4 weeks I think) for shipping but it worked out ok. Just a thought

That seems a good idea, I don't think I can cope without air-con over summer, where did you get it from in the USA?

That'd be sweet. Getting the air con in working order is on the list for my car and I don't particularly want to fork out ~1200$ for the electrician to do it

If you can't, don't worry about it man. It's not a big deal and I can live without aircon

So, time for an update. I took leamedhurst's advice and ordered an air-con service kit from the USA, landed for $402 (shipping was $110) the compressor $245 but it comes with som ancillary parts. I ordered on the 6th, and it arrived here today, so if the labour is the same at $240, I should get a serviced air-con system with new compressor, sent half-way round the world for about $640 or haf what I was quoted on the Sunshine Coast - it's madness!

That's good you've made a saving. Looking forward to your impressions when it's all fitted and going.
