Help on vr6!

Hi all! I'm new to the forum and have a quick question. I want a vr6 but am wondering if its a reliable car for a daily? I am a P plater and would prefer to steer clear from the civics. Will this car be a big sink hole and end up costing me loads to keep it going? I am trying to find one for around 4-5k. Would you recommend a standard mk4 instead if it's not going to be reliable enough? Keep in mind I would prefer the vr! I want a car with a bit of character and power and the vr seems to tick all the boxes! Thank you all in advance!

VRs are between 16 and 20 years old now, most have not been maintained correctly over the time and can turn into a money pit very quickly.
If you look around the forum you will find lots of fun things that can go wrong with them.

personally as a first/p plater car id look at a 1.8lt/2lt mk3 or mk4 2lt as a first car with a good service history and lower km if possible.

Yep, second Dylan for sure. My vr6 is my first car and soon I'll be putting a lot of money into it. But I knew it was coming, 100% agree that most - if not - all are maintained very poorly in the past.
I'm looking at fixing up the whole lot and I'm looking at 3-4k to do so. You must be willing to spend a lot of time and effort to love and care for a vr6.

Will this also affect the non vr6 mk3's? May look into a GL. My Peugeot 306 has **** itself and trying to avoid French cars!

Although Mk3s are oldish cars, they are not necessarily as bad as the VR6s. GL/CLs engine bays are easier to work on opposed to the VR6 engine bays as they super tight - so that's why mechanics stay away from them

yep as above, still have issues as any old car does.
but the VR motor just seems to make everything next level.

Should be able to get a much cleaner and lower km GL for the money you are looking at.

Just to be clear, a VR6 CAN be a very reliable car. They're still typical of german build quality and the motors have been known to reach up to 300,000 MILES in the US. The issue is whether or not you're willing to spend the money on maintaining it and not just sacrificing functionality so you can get more lows or have sick rims. It really is a rewarding car to drive if you put the time and money into it so don't count it out, but if you're expecting to skimp on everything and hope it all works out, then a VR6 isnt for you. You're better of going for the cheaper GL or CL.

Once again, it's an awesome car to have and unique in the way it was one of the first 'muscle' hatchbacks (i.e. alot of people are surprised when you tell them its a 130kw v6). So if you're prepared to love it and spend the money on things that matter, definitely have a punt. 4-5k will get you a half decent one these days as well. So keep your eye out.

Bought my 1.8L CL approx. 5 months ago and it hasn't skipped a beat. It had been somewhat well looked after in it's life but during it's later years, was kind of neglected and needed a bit more love. I addressed the issues, put a very minimal amount of money into it and it's been an awesome daily since. Yes, it is slow but hell, once you're on your full license you're free to have fun in anything you want/dream of so think of it this way...

Yes, a VR would be fun now (considering you find a mint one) but the less you spend on your first car now means greater rewards in the future? Not trying to turn you off buying a VR here, just want to make it clear that unless you're willing to sacrifice the time and money in the long run, then go for it.

Personally, I'm getting my 3door into a respectable state at the moment, trying to fix all the tiny problems until I get my full license and then from there, I'm gonnna hop into something new.

The CL and GL seem a little too boring while the mk4 is a bit too refined. I would still love a VR6 and it sounds like if I can find a clean one with decent km's I'll go for it! I'm willing to take care of one and aren't too fussed on mods so I'll spend the cash on important stuff and keep it relatively stock. If I cant get a clean one I'll just go for a mk4 (boring)!

I bought probably one of the most lemon VR's and don't regret it. Beat the hell out of it, fix it for $50-$400 then beat on it again and they'll keep taking it.

Thats fair enough! Personally, I don't have that 50-400$ to be spending on it every so often but, thats just me.

Will be upgrading to either an R or Audi S3 once I'm on my blacks
