We (the ACT guys & gals) practice this at the local skid pan - used to be the AFP driver training complex.

I organised a half day session last October and everyone learned a little more about their car - various methods to get under/over steer and how to control it. Bucket loads of educational/drifting fun for $100.

No speed limits, no cops and big grins all 'round

          that skidpan looks cool?

do they just use water or is something else added to make it slide more???

looks like great fun (ive done a skidpan in the uk but not in my own car)

Peter from Canberra VW Centre owns the Caddy - and the number plate says it all

The skid pan is smooth concrete with water - that's it. This means that there is bugger all wear on the tyres.

Two Sydney-siders made the trek down for the day, and had a great time (as did we all). It was nice to put faces to the avatars.

All done in our own cars (and one person was lucky enough to have his missus bring the other car - so he had a shot at both cars on the 'pan )

I hope to organise another skid pan day in the second half of the year.

By which time I'll have bigger wheels and stiffer suspension on the Mk1 which should stop it from acting like a boat

I used to do this on corners with a little bit of gravel, once the slide is initiated through a small scandy flick and a bit of lift off (closed and private roads, of course). I have calmed down alot since, and realised that you really need a rwd to do it properly, and realise my car is just a nice little fwd girls car I still love it though!

Just a word of warning, don't try any of this in a paddock. My first car, $200 special Mk1, wound up on its side with 4 people in it after digging a little hard into the dirt. Ahhh, fond memories and such stupidity!

Yea my mk3 does it. The suspension is shot to hell and comming into an off-camber corner is heaps of fun if there is enough space.

The problem is it is very un-predictable whereas I'm a lot more comfortable Pogo pushing it through an off camber (and lighting them up on the exit )

we are hoping to do a vwwatercooled day up at DECA in shepparton. They have a skid pan and a small track out the back. Maybe later in the year though. Its a good way to learn what your car does in a controlled environment
