  • oil light flashing

Gday, ok i'm wondering if anyone can help with this problem with my oil light on a 94 VR6. The oil light flashes whenever the engine is running. from the bently manual i got the info that the low pressure oil switch is always closed, it opens when the oil pressure is > about 3psi. the high pressure oil switch is always open, it closes when the oil pressure is > about 20psi. i have
    • removed the (blue/black) wire to the low oil pressure switch - nothing happened, that is the light kept flashing
    • removed the (yellow) wire to the high oil pressure switch - the alarm started buzzing when the engine speed got over 2500rpm (which it doesnt do when the wire is connected to the high pressure switch as the switch would normally close)

so i reckon the problem isnt a switch, or the oil pressure (not 100% but it sounds ok, apparently VR6s make a real racket when the oil is low) but in the circuit somewhere. by opening the circuit to the low pressure switch the ecu or whatever should think the switch has opened due to the pressure being high enough, but since the light keeps flashing i am guessing there is a short to ground somewhere in that circuit. which will mean the light will always flash for the low pressure switch and the alarm won't sound if the pressure is too low at engine speed > 2500rpm...

any ideas? is there a replaceable component in the instrument cluster that could have shorted? or is it a wire thats lost its insulation? i've seen on vwvortex people suggesting earth/fuse problems, but they usually result in an open circuit not a short...

    cheers

By the time your oil pressure was at 3psi your engine would already be dead.

yeh, more reason to think theres something wrong with the warning system and not with the actual oil pressure...

the bently says "if the switches are performing properly, the oil pump is producing adequate oil pressure and the system still warns of low oil pressure, then the dynamic oil pressure warning system control unit in the instrument cluster should be replaced." i can't find any info on this unit...
