VR6 Chips!!

giac/tt/autotech and all those chips from mjmautohaus aren't compatible with any of our ECU'S here.. mjm won't even reply to me when I say i'm from australia haha. not sure about obd2 though. however, vince from stealth racing in uk can make you one for about 300 that's right for your mods. UK vr6's have the same ecu's as us.

Only problem with this, is when you do more changes to your engine, you have to factor this into the chip aswell (take chip out & send it back for alterations, more $$)

Chipping a obd2 vr is a waste of time and money (compared to flashing), flashing it will give you, your best bang for buck !
Though how much you get out of a flash, will depend on that persons capabilities.

I think you will find the mk3 obd2 ecu cannot be flashed tuned.

You'll have the same gains from a chip as obd1, 10-12hp 10-20ft/lbs or whatever they claim.

Theres a few people on here that have flashed theres.
Not sure exactly how its done but i know that flashing isnt done like u would in a mk5,6,etc

You can buy flash tools for blank chips but that's only half the story.

Thought I'd do an update for those interested.

Finally got the Czechoslovakian chip (on advice from decksla) in the other day along with a socket to solder onto the ECU!

Got into contact with Gavin (^^) who has had plenty of experience with ECU tuning and I got the ECU to him and let him perform his magic overnight. Following day retrieved ECU and plugged it into Nugget with the new chip.

Power (tick)
Ignition (tick)
Starter motor (tick)
Engine fire (Fail...)

So plugged in the vagcom and no response from the ecu so obviously something to do with the new socket and chip.

Returned to the ECU doctor (Gavin) at his 'workshop' the following day to diagnose my computer's disease. After some fiddling around and use of google images for a photo of a VR6 ecu with the chip removed, we got around to continuity testing all 44 pins from the socket to the source and found 3 dodgy contacts. Two were resoldered and one had to be wired in due to the track lifting off the board. Tested and all good so fingers crossed!

Returned home, 'studied' for accounting mid semester, completed mid semester at university. Returned home again and popped in new chip. Plugged in ecu...

Reconnected battery and started car!!! Engine fired straight away and sounded smoother than usual. Ran to operating temperature fine and took a trip up Mount Cootha no problems.

So a quick review of the chip (noting that I have not tried giac or Techtonix variations):

I would say for $60 it really is unbeatable. I have yet to see the fuel economy benefits but have been informed it can provide up to 50klms extra a tank. The engine runs smoother and seems to rev more aggressively. Rev limiter upped to 7500rpm although I havent had the balls to test this out yet. Most notable difference is in second and third gear as has been previously stated in this thread. There a subtle but evident increase in torque in the lower-mid range which is particularly good going up hills. First also revs out alot quicker and throttle response is far better!

Like I said, I cant compare to the name brands like GIAC and TT but for $60 I really couldnt say no to this ebay chip. Time will tell on its durability but it took a good teenage thrashing up mount cootha and city traffic perfectly today so fingers crossed!

Cheers to Gavin (h100vw) for his help and advice with soldering the ECU. Learned some extremely valuable lessons that I otherwise wouldn't have were it done by a tv repairer or something. Will definitely be getting custom code tunes when I get a car that can take them!!
