  • Odb2 engine install in obd1 vr6

    Hi all
New to the forum, after doing many searches I seem to get conflicting information, I have a obd1 3/95 VR6 with crook gearbox but strong motor 183k,s. I also have a 97 VR6 with 133k,s and a good motor box been in a rear ender.I was considering installing the lower k running gear into mine as a complete unit. Some posts say I need every thing including engine harness ecu ect, some don't. I am fairly mechanically competent (turned a volvo 240 into a 5ltr Holden funtoy) as I have the whole car and plenty of time I was hoping for some clarification. Thanks Greg

    Easy.

Just swap the intake manifold from obd1 to obd2 and use obd1 ecu and wiring loom.

Is there any benefit to a full conversion to obd2?

        Depends on your plans.

        1) Scanning for codes and stuff.

        2) Chip tuning, turbo etc.

Don't plan so far to turbo, scanning for codes would be handy. More interested in differences in power and fuel economy.
          Thanks

No differences in either of those.

Seen you got everything you need it would be easy to do.

I've heard the OBD2 gives you a little more power in mid range revs because of the newer throttle body??

With your current set up you can scan for engine codes, you still can. VCDS can still grab obd1 codes. Mate we were grabbing codes in the late 80,s albeit was flash code but still codes so dont worry about that mate

Thanks for the replies guys, I was thinking of keeping the powertrain as a complete unit. As it would have slightly newer tech than obd1. Does anyone know why they moved onto obd2, was it just a evolution of engine software tech or was there some other reason? Thanks Greg

There are a fair few differences, mostly being electronics and the insides of the motor.
Obd2 uses more fuel, which is why the power curve is more ...(carnt think of the word )
Power is the same, just delivered differently. Its more smooth, where as at around 3k-3.5k the power kick in, in a obd1

So yeh the ecu and harness are needed
                    Garage:
                    VR6
                    XR6
                    R36
