  • Modifying a vr6

Hey all just wondering what other mods can you do to the motor to produce some more power?

Gonna have the motor removed for the timing chain so thought I might as well do other things while its apart

    I gonna put bigger cams

Just wondering what other mods could you do?? Or things that should replace so saves me time and money in the longer run

I've been in talks with the mechanic and thinking about a turbo. But being a front wheel drive it won't be as grippy

What are your goals with the car? What is your budget? There are plenty of mods that can be done.

Since I'm gonna have the motor out to do the timing chain

I just wanna see what else could be done to the motor
Gonna put some lumpy cams In there
      Something quick and cheap

Because I'm gonna have a turbo motor built up soon with a mechanic who is gonna do the work

FYI turboing will cost AT LEAST $10k.
Trust me, I'm up to nearly $15k haha

            Mk4 hg,
you won't be able to get away easy with 'lumpy' cams as we do t get to many chip varieties and it'll be pointless.
DRC 268 cams. New lifters new springs.
Port and polish head. Keep stock sized valves.
            Ported upper and lower intake
            Ported exhaust manifold.

quick & cheap does not exist when talking about VR6 engine mods. Do some cams, chip and some port matching and leave it at that unless you want to spend thousands. Im not against awesome NA builds but theyre big bucks if you want to actually make power.

Yes I know about the cost lucky There was a block with forged low comp pistons
                Port and polished head

And most of the motor already done
Just had the mechanics take it apart to check and built it again pull with an added turbo

Just try to get a gearbox together that could handle the power

cams might not give the gains you want, without some other supporting mods.

lightened flywheel is a good cheap mod.

Read this: Should have all the answers you're after.

VWVortex.com - How to build a relatively inexpensive, reliable, powerful Vr6..

In all honesty, if you're planning on turboing the car in the near future, I wouldn't waste money on cams. I'd spend the money needed to make sure the motor (& suspension, bushes, body etc) are all in top condition, ready for more power. OR just save the money for the turbo. As simon said, it aint cheap!

For this stock motor just gonna do the timing chain and most like leave it
Because once u change one thing u on a have to replace another

Then would just lead to heaps of others gonna save the money and save for the other Engine in the build
Because I just realise I want something reliable,

Its a well known fact since they came out the 12v VR6 is best left alone it takes big $s for a very small gain.
                        Supercharge or turbo it.
Small and cheap gains can be made with a chip, modified intake (cold air) and free exhaust.

The most I've seen out N/A VR6's are around 160wkw. Steve's Auto Clinic in South Africa used to/or still do 3.1 conversions, which covers bigger pistons, flowed and ported head, 1mm oversize valves, 260 deg cams and unichip piggyback module. I remember to get parts and having it done here, the conversion would've worked out about half the price than a supercharger kit. They have flowed and ported heads on exchange there as well.

That was enough to give E36/46 M3's a whoopin on the 1/4mile!

                          Cheers
