  • VR6 misfiring and power loss

Ok so I'm going to have a closer look tomorrow, but the VR has recently been misfiring at low revs/under load and seems a little sluggish intermittently, fuel economy seems greater than usual and I'm guessing it could be the coil pack. Ill look for some more evidence of it tomorrow but I just wanted to hear people's experiences with aftermarket brands (eg. Huco from GAP). Hopefully it's just leads, plugs etc but yeah.

Could also be MAF I guess, did the Swiss cheese mod recently hopefully that doesn't have something to do with it...

    Thoughts?

Bring it to the factory for a scan.

Should be able to see if coilpacks arcing by wetting it with some water from a spray bottle at night and look for sparks. Alternatively spray it with wd40 and see if it improves. Probably nest to try the wd40 first so your not trying to insulate the spark on a wet coil pack. I bought a new coilpack from an american distributor through ebay. Was damn cheap but was still missing and for a refund they wanted me to pay the postage back which was more than the item. so if your purchasing one don't do that. There's a diy on here and all over the net about jb weld fix if its cracked. People also rig up some ford ones to suit because apparently they're more reliable, there's alsso the msd systems. Hope that helps at all if it's coilpack.

Ah ok that'd be good man. Ill be down a bit later on tonight maybe like 10-11 so hopefully you guys are still around.

And thanks Anthony ill keep that in mind. GAP has one for 190 let alone shipping where as OEM are almost 400 which sucks. The DIY with JB weld looks cool. We'll see what happens.

you can pull the coilpack off (15mins work) and visually inspect it for cracks etc.

Did you recently wash the engine bay?

Alright, I might try that. I washed it maybe a week ago.

It could be a bit of moisture from when you washed the bay. (that's what happened to mine)

+1 I'd assume this is it too. Best you can do is leave the bonnet up in the sun to help it dry out. Might also be worth shooting some compressed air around the coilpack, plugs etc to try move any water that's pooling

Its easy enough to pull the coil pack off, and pull it apart. That way you'll know if the coilpack is cracked, rather than just guessing

If it helps I just found out the coil pack is the problem of all my probs! I found that mine is not arching but the four pin connector that goes into it is where the problem is. On my Vr6 when idling if I push that connector towards the engine then my revs come up from 500 -under 1000 and there is no more shuddering. So basically I gotta get a new coilpack. Hope it helps.

Could be just the bottom part of the coilpack, maybe you can change just that usually the top halves break.
I have a bottom part here or brand new coilpack if required. Its always coilpack or leads with vr6 and both are expensive.

from what iv gathered the coilpack fails due to the location. It gets too hot! try this with a new one.

                          VR6 misfiring and power loss

That's a good idea but at $35 for a piece of insulator and 4 bolts. I'm sure there's cheaper way to achieve the same result. Even just a washer on each bolt to space the coilpack out a little for some ventilation.
