  • Help Installing a towbar

Hey there i need to install the wiring for the towbar.
Buy a DIY kit and follow the instructions??

Also people have told me for my Vr6 i need a ECU for it?? True??

Highly unlikely it'll need a separate ECU.

Just tap into the relevent wires for each light (1 tail, 1 brake, 1 for each blinker), and go from there. For the earth, there's bound to be an earth point somewhere in the back of the car not far from the tail light wiring.

sounds unlikely, no issues putting a towbar on a mk4 so a mk3 shouldnt be a problem

Should be pretty straight forward installing it. As for the wiring exactly as "umai naa!!" Said you can just tap into the relevant wires and wired it to the socket. There might be a oem harness for it which should be plug and play but I don't know whether they came from factory with a towbar

I've order my wiring harness with the cable today

Ill install it when I get it

I'm only worried I would damage my computer cause I didn't install a ecu

You won't destroy your computer all your doing is extending your tail lights, the signals won't go anywhere near your computer

Very doubtful this will happen, I really shouldn't worry.... i'm assuming the harness just plugs into the passenger side tail light? all should be fine

Both sides (needs drivers side indicators). 'ECU' just stops the car from getting tail light error - not sure if that is gonna be an issue with a Mk3

pretty sure with the mk3's one tail runs from the other? could be wrong though...

Cheers for the help gonna install it this weekend,
its a universal one so im gonna tap into the relevant wires

The Towbar guy said that cause its a european car i might need a ecu he said extra 110 bucks and if i didnt have one it could fck up the computer thats the only thing im worried about.

Pretty sure just for the mk4 onwards mk3's should be fine without it as we don't have very fancy electronics

From looking at the Bentley wiring diagram....

Black/Red = Left Brake Light (in the 6 pin connector on the left tail light)
Grey/Black = Left Tail Light (in the 6 pin connector on the left tail light)
Black/White = Left Rear Turn Signal (in the 6 pin connector on the left tail light)

Brown = Ground (in the left tail light in the 4 pin connector)

Black/Red = Right Brake Light (in the 6 pin connector on the left tail light)
Grey/Red = Right Tail Light (in the 4 pin connector on the left tail light)
Black/Green = Right Rear Turn Signal Light (in the 4 pin connector on the left tail light)

                            Hope that's good info
