  • I hate it when that happens

Well the ever reliable Vento (326,000+k's) has blotted it's copy book, well to a degree anyway.

Last week I am working away and she who must be obeyed rings sounding all worried and explaining that she was happily toodling down the road at 100kph when all of a sudden a buzzer is going off and the oil pressure light is flashing.

So proving she does listen sometimes she immediately pulls over and switches it off. I lob there thinking that maybe like my old 16V it popped a head gasket and spat all the oil out. Lift the bonnet and all appears good, plenty of coolant, plenty of oil and everything where it should be. So naturally I try to start it. This thing ain't going anywhere. So I pop the cover off the timing belt and one end springs up in my face. I know this is not good.

Anyway after it is towed to my mate's mechanic shop I wait for the post mortem. The tensioner had seized causing the cam belt to break.

So last Saturday with my mates help we pull the head off to survey the damage. Surprisingly it is not so bad. One bent exhaust valve.

I have included a few photos. Sorry about the quality I only had my phone with me. You can see in the close up (hopefully) there are 2 little black arcs on the left of the valve which are the witness marks of where it came into contact with the piston in number 1 cylinder. There is a noticeble mark on number 4 exhaust valve as well but an old fashioned kero test appears to show that it is OK.

I am hoping to get it all put back together tomorrow. A bit of a bugger just before christmas.

326000km! Good on ya for getting it fixed though, we don't see enough Ventos on the roads.

Side note, the front end looks so high without the block in

Replaced the exhaust valve with a new one and put it back together today. Drove it about 60k's on the test drive and then on the way home. Gave it a bit of a hiding. It seems all good again thankfully and should be good for another 100,000k's or so....

Best thing is now my wife doesn't have to drive my Cupra anymore.

The same thing happened to mine, the pulley seized and it then sheared the belt off, no damage on mine though, travel on the valves was good, plus it didnt throw any codes out, and it now it alot nicer to drive after getting the belt re-done. Plus it was on its way to getting the belt changed that week, having taken it away from a mech who insisted it was a 1.6, not a 2 litre. oh well I should have gotten on to mine earlier.

Props to you for keeping a rare sight on our roads mate looks pretty tidy as well
