  • reverse gear pops out and crunches(mk3)

out of no where my reverse gear doesnt wanna stay in the gear and pops out all the time and crunches heaps and goin up a hill in reverse is imposable. any 1 ever had this problem?

can't say i've ever had this problem... mine just has loads of trouble going into gear. I've heard that you can use a series of ropes and pulleys that go out the window and under the car to hold the gears in the reverse position.

    haha kidding.

have a look in the engine bay at all of the gear linkages - i did actually have a problem where the car stopped going into gear completely - turns out to be one of the little plastic connectors that had popped off...

My old GL did this. i got all of the linkage bushings replaced and she was sweet.

Shouldn't cost too much to get done.

Yeah, but it won't be cheap if your not completely confident with it. Its not that easy to change bushings and linkages if your an amateur mechanic.

mine cruches on 2nd gear. but after red line gear oil was my solution.
I was told gear mount is also a culprit.

I also have a similar problem where reverse gear will occassionally not engage properly and just spins without connecting properly, sounds awful, but not common enough for me to spend any money fixing it yet!

Sounds like your reverse idler gear is fooked ruski

could be linkages, but sounds too bad for that.

thanks guys, ill try the linkages but i dont think it is it. iv adjusted the gear stik to make sure it is in gear and still no matter how hard i push it and hold the gear stik in it still pops out.if its not linkages then in goes a new gearbox.

hey ppl. lol still driving with out reverse gear, changed the linkages and its still fukt. i think the gear is fukd, ****ty golf. how can that happen i rarely use reverse and i didnt trash my reverse gear and it fuks up??
its pretty fun to drive with out been able to drive in reverse tho. always hav to park up a hill so it rolls back on its own and in narrow streets i just use the handbrake to do a 180 so i dont have to do a 3 point turn. i think the gear it self is stuffed it stayes in the gear when drive in reverse it drive 0.5m good then it crunches for 0.5m then reverses ok then starts crunching.......

it sounds like its not quite getting into gear properly in the first place... sucks if it is the gearbox - they are expensive...

did you change the bushings too or just the linkages? (linkages being in the engine bay, bushing being under the gearstick.)

yea changed everything and it does go in the gear properly and it stays in and the gear stik doesnt jump or tries to pop out the gear when the gear crunches it just viabrates a little bit. i just cant belive that this car has such stupid problem, vw make solid cars and something this stupid happens

                          I've a 1995 Mk3 that get's into reverse gear okay....

My problem is the horrendous grinding/clicking noise it makes in reverse. I think I've lost a tooth from the idler.
Can anyone give advice on a gearbox rebuild or put me in touch with a good box? It's due to have a new clutch, so might as well get it fixed while the box is out anyway. I'm in Brisbane and can collect.

Not sure how much a box rebuild costs but u can pick up gearboxes for 300-400.
