  • Question - Wheels, Tyres, Suspension

    Good morning Everyone,

I know this would have been covered a million times before, and I have done my research. I just want to double check and clarify what I am doing is right before I go drop a tonne of cash only to be disappointed.

I have a MK3 CL (which is super tidy) that I want to tidy up and have as a cool daily.

I am looking at a set of XXR or ESM wheels for it and a drop with some guard work etc as it needs some paintwork anyways.

    Specs as follows.

    16x8+20 with 195x40R16 Tyres
    Guard Roll / loving
Drop it to 110mm or so (Safe legal height)

    1. What suspension drop will get it to that height?
    2. Suggestions on good products (Non coilover preferred)
    3. How much guard loving will be required with the +20's?
    4. Will there be any suspension clearance issues?
    5. Is a 195x40R16 a good tyre choice?

Like I said just double checking before I go spending money on something only to be disappointed...

    Cheers,

    Joe

Hope your not spending 'a tonne of cash' on Xxr wheels...
Other then rolling archs I can't imagine much would be required.
110mm tho? I can't imagine your car will be legal any more, need coil overs or bags for that.
Think most mk3 guys would suggest a 195/45/16, but if your going that low a smaller profile tyre like the one you mentioned might be required so you can turn...

Haha no, not a tonne of cash but a set of wheels, tyres, guard work and suspension work starts to add up... Would suck if I didn't get it how I wanted it... And yes they are supposed to be 195x45R16's... My bad.

By 110mm I mean 110mm off the ground at it's lowest point. As per QLD regulations. Or am I dreaming? I would have thought 110mm would only have been a 2 or 3 inch drop?

ahhh ok. I thought you meant a 110 drop (as in 110mm lower then what you are now). im with you now.
16x8et20 with the 195/45s sounds good. I think just rolling them would be enough, but ill let the mk3 experts voice there opinion

Yeah I just ordered a set of 16x8+15's. I did a tonne of googling and found a few photos. Looks reasonable, it's always safer to go slightly higher offset and space out I figured. I might throw a 5mm on the back or something if i get picky..

Guard rolling / coilovers will happen. Unfortunately it's a 3 week wait on the wheels...

i have coilovers, and ill be mounting 8.5 and 7.5 +14 offset wheels soon, gaurds will be rolled, but not pumped. and i will be illegally low, but not as low as many around here. ill let you know how it goes so you can reference how it goes.

From what i've read, a 60mm F and 40mm R drop sits just above legal height, so around 110mm/120mm I believe.

JOM COILOVER SUSPENSION NEW FOR VW GOLF CABRIOLET MK3 MK4 on eBay!

So I have found the JOM Coilovers out of the UK linked above... I have also read reviews on JOM coilovers, everyone seems to believe they perform reasonably well and are crazy good value for the money... This just seems way to good a price?

Is this part of the what is too good is often too good to be true scenario?

Probably. But on the other hand I went the opposite direction and spent big dollars on KW V2 coilovers years ago and now I kinda regret it since they're gettin too harsh for me (I'm 31 and I've got back issues).

for the $$$ id say they are fine, tuning art and hot tuning are basically the same thing too. FKS overseas get a bad wrap due to their weather and road condition but in aus they seem to pretty well for the price.

I have koni's and on the softest setting are nice but a little bouncy, so i have them set to about 3 /10 stiffness.

havent trial fitted yet, but should fit nicely with very similar specs to you

JOM's are bouncy as....well compared to the more premium ones. I would recommend saving a bit more money and getting something in the middle of the price range. Even the JOMs with the adjustable dampening would be better. Jus' sayin'.

Legal height? More like boring height, SLAMMM ITTT!

your going the wrong way then.
if you want to be safe of 8et20, you need to go to 8et25 etc, not a lower number...

Yeah I realise this... But then I realised I was aiming for mediocrity.... I was going to go +10's but went to +15's... haha

Same goes for the coilovers I guess... I have the money there just reluctant to spend a ****load on something that I won't use the potential of...

you'll only need a roll and I have a guard roller....with a heat gun it's simple stuff, so don't go paying a monkey to do it....

and your wheels will sit pretty with a 5-10mm spacer out back....

as for coilovers, any will be fine at the height you're going to screw them to..... to be honest, I think with this wheel and tyre combo, dropping to legal height is going to look gayer then aids.... but we'll see I guess.....lol
