My 94 vr doesn't have a immobilizer but the 96 CL that i just parted out did. Its a ring that goes around the ignition barrel and accepts signals from a chip in the key. Cutting the key wasn't expensive when i enquired but getting a key with a programmable chip and having it programmed was very expensive.
can anyone provide a bit more information on how to identify whether you have an immobilizer or not?
What does and immobilizer key look like one without?
reading this thread has gotten me scared about losing my key....
Pry your key plastic open and the chip should be in there wedged close to the key , I don't think my 94 gl had an immobiliser but I never checked so idk .
VAG started using immobilsiers in 1995. The keys look very similar to the early non transponder keys but the head on them is a little larger to accommodate the transponder chip.
most VAG cars will have a immo symbol in the cluster that will stay illuminated until a valid key is recognized in the ignition. I don't think the MK3 Golf have this though, I can check one of the clusters that I have in the shed.
Don't be scared of loosing your key just make sure that you have a spare. At most you will be paying around $160 to get a spare key cut for an early VAG car which to me is is cheap for the piece of mind that you won't be stuck without a key. I advice against gluing the chip around the key reader too. I have had instances where customers have done this and the chip has come loose and been lost or broken, it also voids your insurance as you have now made your car easier to steal ( not that car theirs really smash locks off anymore.)
I get a lot of customer that didn't get a spare key because "it was too expensive". Well when you don't have a working key to go from it cost more. If you go through the dealer you will also be waiting a week for you key as they all come from VW Germany.

I know that new Ford's come with a plastic identifier of some sort attached to the spare key.

Probably the master key. My wife's Mk5 R32 came with it and it's still on MY key ring. Can't remember if it has notches or just a number printed on it.
I remember reading somewhere that the plastic tag with the printed number on it is a key ID, which you can quote to VW and they can create a duplicate key based on that number alone.
The tag would of been the mechanical key code, this code relates to the cuts on the key to work the lock. The dealer does not need this as they keep all this information on record, if you were ever to get a key from them all they would need is the VIN and from that the key will be cut to suit your locks and have all the relevant coding needed for it to be programmed to your car.
