  • 94 Golf MK3 Lost Key!

    Hi All,

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do about a lost key for my 94 Golf MK3? I have searched everywhere and cannot find the original or spare key, so I'm in quite a pickle!

Any advice / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks all

have you tried going to a vw dealed maybe they can order one under your VIN number or you would have to change your locks and ignition barrel .

$50 for a new key and $150 to recode the chip from VDub. If you have the original key you can get one on ebay for about £6 shipped and recode by someone with a vagcom. Just make sure you get one with a chip.
Sorry just read your post properly, buy a new ignition assembly from a wrecker with at least one key and change it over. VW will be ridiculously over priced. Put in remote central locking to save changing the door locks. The immobiliser screws you over for an easy fix.

And auto electrician should be able to swap it out pretty easily just rember you need the immobiliser with a matching transponder chip in the key. As for the price, dunno, try the classified section on the forum here, look for some one parting out a mk3 the guys on here are great and can usually help a brother out with stuff at an amazing prices. Good luck mate, it's hard having a VW paper weight sitting in the drive, specially coming into the good driving weather.

Eurotoy auto wreckers in Deerpark have a few mk3s give them a call but they may be alittle pricey.

NO chip, no go in my '95 Mk3.
As my local key cutter found to his cost when doing us up a duplicate key. We bought a car with only one key.
The duplicate is to reduce the risk of repeating what Timmy1878 is going through.

Timmy, shop around for the spare, but do get 2 keys Our local guy did it for $130 all up, and says that with what he learned doing ours, he can now copy a Mk3 key for $90.

                    Hi Guys,

Excuse my ignorance (stupidity!) and thanks for all the responses. So should I be attempting to find a lock smith who is able to do a copy and assume that my model doesn’t have an immobiliser? As I received a response from one dealer who suggested getting a locksmith to take a barrel out of the door and then cut a key to suit… I also received one response from a deal suggesting I needed to order a key from Germany (Quoting $700 and a 3 week delay!)

Yowie: Does your local guy send keys to Melbourne lol.

                    Thanks again

                      Timmy,
The guy I went to could only help as long as I had a key to show him; so he wont be much use to you.
I mentioned him to illustrate that you should be able to find someone to cheaply cut the spare key.
But this can only happen after you sort out the problem of having no key, which is a higher order of problem.
I would be assuming there is an immobilising chip until proven otherwise. I am no expert here.

Sorry to dig up a mega old thread, but i too don't have a spare key for my 94' VR6 and would like to get one just in case the one i have goes missing.

Could you confirm whether the 94 had immobilizer and where best to get a replacement(I'm in Sydney though)?

edit: originally incorrectly typed 96 instead of 94 for my vr6

i got some keys off ebay for like $9 each.

my 98 vr6 had an immobilizer chip in the original key, but i took it out and it's glued behind the shroud next to the barrel only because i wanted to use other keys and not pay for the chip, heard it's $$.

i haven't got my keys cut yet but they're just blanks and the plastic around the end isnt hollow so they feel more solid.
                              ill post a pic
