I just had the suitcase muffler cut out and a pipe welded in on my old vr6, cost me like $70 and it sounded amazing. Doesn't do anything for performance but if you're just after a nice sound on the cheap I'd definitely recommend it.
Suitcase delete seems to be the favourite for cheap good sound like Ben J said. I think mine has a 2.25" exhaust. Not sure what mufflers and resonators etc as it was done by previous owner. Sounds pretty mean.
Im doing a 3" high flow cat to 2.5" exhaust, long hot dog and stainless muffler with twin 3" tips. I'll be welding it up next week

i've got a scorpion cat-back system with a high flow 200 cell cat!
the cat really made a difference so I suggest getting one if your after a nicer tone!
if your after a nice sound and don't wanna go through with a full cat back then I recommend suitcase delete and a nice high flow cat
here ya go!
I've had the following exhaust setups on mein dub:
1) Extractors, unknown cat, hotdog to 2.5" straight through rear muffler. Loud, great noise on high revs, but very droney on the freeway.
2) Extractors, unknown cat, hotdog to 2.5" generic "sport" muffler. Wonderfully quiet, still great flow. Decent noise on high revs.
3) Extractors, unknown cat, full 2.25" magnaflow SS exhaust system imported from the US. Sounds freaking amazing, but droney at freeway speeds.
Very soon will be taking off the extractors and putting back on a stock mani & downpipe. I'm hoping this'll eliminate the drone. Failing that, I've got a full Remus system sitting in the shed. I'm getting too old for a noisy zorst!
I've had a Jetex 2.5" Catback system with a high flow cat, and ported exhaust manifold and downpipe for the last....year and a half to two years? Its awesome. From what i researched the 2.5 systems are usually quite a bit louder, but The jetex system is nice sounding, not loud or droning at all. But when you hammer it, my god it sounds wicked. 100% recommended
