Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MK3 GL Engine clunking and rough idle 2L- HELP!

Seeking help from fellow watercooled members!
Scenario: Ordered a PCV block-off part from e-bay to block off the PCV and delete the breather hose like Ray did on his SH73OX as mine was deteriorated and was leaking oil all over the engine bay.

Part in talking: eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d

Came in the mail yesterday, set about installing it.
Took the green clip that holds the hose to the engine block off.
Tried to plug in the new adapter-wouldn't fit as there was a metal ring obstructing it.
Pushed a bit harder and the metal seems to have sunk in with the adapter-so I got an idea and took that piece off and
installed the adapter. Voila! fit perfectly.
Onto the top, removed the crankcase and the valve cover grommet with some effort and blocked off the hole with a rubber grommet that Ray kindly donated.
Blocked off the hole in the air-box using cable ties, yes, cable-ties. Made sure it was sitting flush and wasn't letting any air in; Put a slight layer of glue around it too just to make sure.

Time to turn the car on! Turned over, idles like it used to everything was fine! Gave it a couple of revs and let it idle for 2 mins and then turned off. Took a hand-wash break and came back and turned the can back on and it was just fine!

So I decide to go for a drive, reversed out of the driveway, started driving up the street and the car just went crazy on the accelerator even though I wasn't on it! Put it into neutral to see if it would help, no, it was redlining!

Turned it off, checked the throttle cable in the bay and all, turned it back on, same thing.
Opened the PCV block-off, started it again, did the same thing so I turned it off.
Third time, started it revs climbed up, but then all of a sudden started spluttering and making weird noise and idles very rough and makes a clunking noise..

So that is where I am now.

Thankfully I was taking pictures along the way to document the process, now it might help you guys understand better.

Why are you removing the PCV ? Seriously if someone told you to jump off a bridge as well cause its fun would you ?

How is the engine meant to breath ? All I can see is the crankcase pressure just building up and pushing all the seals out , rocker cover , idle stabiliser etc . Put it back to standard and just fix whats wrong . If you dont understand what your doing then your best not to do it !

So wait, did you block it off completely at the rocker cover? That is an awful idea. As said, the engine needs to breathe. You'd be better just putting a filter on there and letting it breathe to the atmosphere (this is illegal, although I ran my old vr6 like that for ages), fixing the PCV valve, setting up a catch can or running a hose frmo the rocker cover to the intake.

Make sure that plug in your intake is not leaking and the engine isn't getting in any air it shouldnt be, make sure you didn't disconnect or bump/break anything else in the process of doing this. If the engine is getting unmetered air that could cause idle problems for sure.
