Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MK3 Immobilizer coding

Tried to help a guy out today who bought a VR6 wreck without a key.

I had a spare immobiizer unit with SKC number and I borrowed a transponder key from a friend who didn’t need the transponder.

I wanted to program the unit to accept the new transponder. I followed the steps as found on the VCDS site but of course it didn’t work.

It seemed to suggest to me that the key couldn’t be matched to the unit and I also wasn’t happy that the SKC number was being accepted.

My VR6 doesn't have an immobiliser, so I couldn't swap anymore bits and of course we couldn't get the car to run.

Anybody else done this, any little tricks?

I had my immobiliser ring break twice in my car, eventually i replaced the ecu and all the immobiliser parts (Immobiliser ring and the box it connects to, all from the same car) but there are a few places that will code you a new key for about $150 i cant help you with names but someone on here probably could.
