  • GL manual gearbox

    Hey guys,

My cars decided that reverse isn't a great direction to travel and since I'm replacing the clutch really soon, I wanted to know, should I be looking for a full gear box replacement or just those parts broken. (assuming its only reverse that needs fixing.) I got one quote of 1.8k but they couldn't say if that was all the cost evolved. So What options do I really have and what would you recommend?

And for the record, the lesson learnt is don't let friends tell you they know how to drive manual.

I cant give any technical advise sorry, but you should easily be able to get an entire secondhand gearbox for a fair bit less than that.

Although I suppose you would also have to pay labour if you arent doing it yourself

They're not a hard gearbox to remove, strip down, and replace the gear. However, it's ideal to tear it down completely, including pulling the diff out, to inspect the bearings for shrapnel off the reverse gear.

The gear itself is around $380, the VW gearbox sealant is around $50, plus you'll need service kits for the output flanges at $40ea, and then whatever other bearings and parts you might need.

I've been quoted in the past for customers, anywhere between $700 for an unknown used one, to over $1200 for a rebuilt one. That's just for the gearbox itself.

sure its not just the gear lever bushing? I thought my reverse was gone, but it was only the bushing

It's falls out of the gear unless I hold it in and makes a 'klanking' sound while reversing. I'm not to sure what it is to be honest because I'm not very familiar with transmission diagnostics.

ALRIGHT!!! Gearbox is now gone as my car doesn't like gears hitting each other.
so I got a new rebuilt one and a new clutch!! Yahooo!!
But it has trouble going into first, read up on it and I'm thinking it's bushings have gone.. Anyone want to agree with me?? Btw mattross the link isn't working to check the bushings myself.
