  • '95 Vento manual steering rack conversion?

My power steering pump and rack are both stuffed. The pump wines at 1750rpm like a little supercharger and the rack/column joint sounds loose (or something).
Rather than spending over $500 (probably closer to $900 on new parts) on a pump and rack would I be better off just replacing the rack with a manual one and deleting the pump all together? My very first car was a '75 Corolla and I loved the non-power steering! lol

This place sells 'em and I suppose I'd need to get tie rods as well.

    Anything else needed?

    Has anyone done this before?

I'm sure you could find a PAS rack second hand that'd work. People are always parting cars out on here. Possibly check with Matt and Camden GTI?

    I wouldn't want no power steering in a mk3. that's what mk1's are for.

You can replace the bushing at the bottom of the steering column just above the top uni. That usually takes most of the slop out of them.

Pumps are pretty easy to come by. Make sure you run the right oil in it, though.

It had the wrong fluid in it when I bought it. I've since replaced the fluid but it seems the damage has been done. I will probably go see Matt, I first met him a few weeks ago (bought the fluid off him). At the moment the steering is just noisy, I'll replace parts when it becomes dangerous lol.
So manual steering is a no-go? I just like simplicity, one less thing to maintain and one less thing to go wrong.

It's your car mate so your decision. I haven't touched my PAS is 50,000km an it's been fine. Could hardly call it a hassle to maintain.

I still like the idea of manual steering, don't ask me why...
Anyone know what tie-rod assembly would fit on that rack in the link I posted?
